John MillerJohn Miller (B.S. '69, aerospace engineering [AE] and M.S. '74, mechanical engineering [ME]), a director at the Army Research Laboratory, received a prestigious Presidential Rank Award for 2007. The award honors high-performing senior career employees for "sustained extraordinary accomplishment."

Andrew NewmanAndrew Newman (Ph.D. '99, electrical engineering [EE]) won the Hart Prize for Excellence in Development from the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. He received the prize for his role as principal investigator on the project, "Development: Tactically Responsive Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Management." Newman's advisor was Professor P.S. Krishnaprasad (electrical and computer engineering [ECE]/Institute for Systems Research [ISR]).

Wen-Hsien ChuangWen-Hsien Chuang (Ph.D. '05, EE) has received an Intel Achievement Award, the greatest honor an employee can earn at Intel. Chuang, a former advisee of Professor Reza Ghodssi (ECE/ISR), received the award as part of the Technology and Manufacturing Group for the development of innovative silicon diagnostic solutions at Intel.


Sandra UgrinaSandra Ugrina (Ph.D. '07, AE) received a 2008 L'Oreal USA Fellowship for Women in Science. She has received $40,000 towards her post-doctoral research in active flow control.


Pedro WasmerPedro E. Wasmer (B.S. '62, civil engineering) received the University of Maryland Alumni Association's Tyser Gottwals Award for his service to the university. Wasmer, who retired last year as CEO of Somerset Capital Group Ltd., is a member of the Clark School Board of Visitors and a trustee of both the University of Maryland College Park Foundation and the University System of Maryland Foundation.


Buno Pati and Phil WiserBuno Pati (B.S. '86, M.S. '88 and Ph.D. '92, EE) and Phil Wiser (B.S. '90, EE) have announced the creation of a new broadcast TV network called "Sezmi. " The new network, set to debut later this year, will deliver TV shows to most large U.S. cities for about half of the monthly cost of cable and satellite television.


Vahid MotevalliVahid Motevalli (B.S. '83, M.S. '85 and Ph.D. '89, ME) has been named associate provost for research and graduate studies at Dubai Aerospace Enterprise University.


Amy ChildressAmy Childress (B.S. '92, civil engineering) has been appointed chair of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno.


Tianjin University, ChinaJingtao Wang (M.S. '02 and Ph.D. '06, chemical engineering [CHE]) has been appointed to an associate professorship in the School of Chemical Engineering at Tianjin University, China (pictured left). Wang's research focus is on thermodynamics in water phenomena and crystallization. While at the Clark School, Wang was advised by Professor Mikhail Anisimov (chemical and biomolecular engineering).

John MarchDavid E. Scott (B.S. '85, CEE, and M.Eng. '00) has been appointeded director of public works for the city of Baltimore.


John MarchJohn C. March (Ph.D. '05, CHE), an assistant professor in Cornell University's Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering, has been awarded a Hartwell Foundation grant of $100,000 a year for three years to support his current research. March, who directs Cornell's Metabolic and Signal Engineering Lab, received the funding for an innovative way to treat chronic and debilitating juvenile (type 1) diabetes.

AHS LogoMichael S. Torok (M.S. '86 and Ph.D. '89, AE) and Edward C. Smith (M.S. '90 and Ph.D. '92, AE) have been elected as technical fellows of AHS International. The AHS Technical Fellow Awards are granted to society members whose career-based accomplishments towards the goals and objectives of the vertical flight industry constitute an outstanding technical achievement. Torok is a chief engineer at Sikorsky Aircraft, and Smith is director of Penn State's Rotorcraft Center. Torok also received the Clark School's Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award at the University of Maryland Alumni Association Awards Gala.

Reza GhanadanReza Ghanadan (B.S. '88, EE and physics; M.S. '90, EE; and Ph.D. '93, EE) was named Engineering Fellow at BAE Systems, an honor conferred upon approximately 1 percent of engineers and scientists at BAE. Ghanadan's expertise is in electronics and integrated solutions. During his time as a student, he was advised by Professor Gilmer Blankenship (ECE).


Safety and Security for the Process IndustryDennis P. Nolan (B.S. '77, fire protection engineering) recently published his sixth book, Safety and Security Review for the Process Industry, which is available through William Andrew Applied Science Publishers.


Rohit Grover and Tarek IbrahimTwo alumni co-authored a book based upon research they began working on as Ph.D. students at the Clark School. Rohit Grover (M.S. '99 and Ph.D. '04, EE) and Tarek Ibrahim (Ph.D. '03, EE) collaborated on a new book titled Optical Microresonators: Theory, Fabrication, and Applications. While at the Clark School, Grover was advised by Professor Ping-Tong Ho (ECE) and Ibrahim was advised by Professor Julius Goldhar (ECE).

Kaya OnurOnur Kaya (M.S. '02 and Ph.D. '05, EE) received a best paper award at the IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference. The paper he co-authored with his student, Cagatay Edemen, is titled: "Achievable Rates for the Three User Cooperative Multiple Access Channel." Kaya is currently assistant professor in electronics engineering at Isik University in Turkey. Kaya was advised by Professor Sennur Ulukus (ECE/ISR).

Imran ShamanImran Shamim (B.S. '07, EE) wrote a paper that took first prize in the Technical Report category of the University of Maryland Professional Writing Program's Annual Writing Contest, sponsored by the English Department. Shamim's paper was a technical report titled "Design, Simulation, and Layout of a Serial Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) Array for On-Chip, Analog Parameter Control."

Kiwesa King-Yara, M.S. '92, ME, won the 2007 Professional Women in Construction Special Recognition Award. King-Yara is president and founder of Suretech Engineering.


Greg HiemenzGreg Hiemenz (M.S. '00 and Ph.D. '07, AE) was named the 2008 AIAA National Capital Chapter Young Engineer of the Year.


AlumNancy Linton (B.S. '98, EE), a systems engineer at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md., was awarded the 2008 Black Engineer of the Year Award for Outstanding Technical Contribution in Government at the 22nd Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conference.


alumRodney Oddoye (B.S. '02, EE), received a Modern Day Technology Leadership Award at the 22nd Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conference. Oddoye works for BGE as a senior engineer.


DeAnna AllenDeAnna D. Allen (B.S. '90, EE) was recognized by Black Enterprise magazine on its "Hot List," published in the December 2007 issue. The "Hot List" is a biennial list of professional and entrepreneurial "powerhouses" that recognizes persons under the age of 40 for their work in a variety of areas.


Protagoras CutchisProtagoras "Tag" Cutchis (B.S. '79, EE and physics, and M.S. '90, EE) was named to Baltimore magazine's list of the fifteen "Most Intriguing Baltimoreans" in its December 2007 issue. Cutchis was cited for his scientific accomplishments.


Thomas MasonThomas Mason (B.S. '89, EE and physics), professor of physics and chemistry and biochemistry at UCLA, recently had his research exhibited at New York's Museum of Modern Art. “Lithoparticle Dispersions: Colloidal Alphabet Soup,” an exhibit of Mason’s research of particles in viscous liquid, was on display. The research was conducted by Mason and his graduate student Carlos Hernandez.

alumRoy McCauley (B.S. '92, ME) was the crew chief of Ryan Newman's winning Daytona 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race. It was McCauley's second career Cup victory as a crew chief. McCauley participated in the Society of Automotive Engineers student group as a University of Maryland student.


Jessica GalieJessica Galie (B.S. '04, ME) has been awarded a full-tuition scholarship to the Master's degree program in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT. She will work on her Masters thesis in the BioInstrumentation Lab under the direction of Professor Lynette Jones.
