On Thursday, October 15, the Clark School will host the 2009 Charles and Helen White Symposium on Engineering Innovation: "Connected 24/7: How Today's Electronics Influence the Way We Live."
The symposium will discuss the impact of the phase-shift lithography process developed by alumnus Buno Pati in the mid-1990s. Pati, who will be inducted into the Clark School's Innovation Hall of fame in a brief ceremony just preceding the symposium, enabled the design and production of subwavelength integrated circuits, and thus the creation of the cell phones, laptops, MP3 players, GPS devices and other technologies in wide use today.
The symposium will take place at 5 p.m. in the Kim Engineering Building lecture hall (Room 1110) following the 2009 Clark School Innovation Hall of Fame induction of alumnus Buno Pati (B.S. '86, M.S. '88 and Ph.D. '92, electrical engineering). A virtual version of Pati's panel in the Innovation Hall of Fame is available online.
The symposium speakers include:
Phil Wiser '90 on Entertainment Mr. Wiser is co-founder, chairman and president of Sezmi Corporation and former chief technology officer of Sony Corporation of America. He will speak about how today’s electronics are changing the user experience of music, TV, games, and the web, and their impact on business.
Derek Hansen on Mass Collaboration Dr. Hansen is assistant professor of information studies and director of the Center for Advanced Study of Communities and Information at the University of Maryland. He will speak about how today’s electronics are enabling online mass collaboration for scientific data capture, social interaction studies, and healthcare.
Michael Silberman on Political Campaigns Mr. Silberman is co-founder and director of EchoDitto, Inc. and managed the Howard Dean campaign’s Meetup operation. He will speak about how today’s electronics are changing political campaigning.
Yagyensh (Buno) Pati '86, '88 and '92 Dr. Pati is co-founder and chief executive officer of Sezmi Corporation and was founder, president and chief executive officer of Numerical Technologies, Inc. He is our 2009 inductee into the Clark School Innovation Hall of Fame.
The event will feature talks by each of the speakers above, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Clark School Dean Darryll Pines.
