Electrical
engineering (EE) alumnus Hon. Gordon England (B.S. ’61), former Deputy Secretary
of Defense
and Secretary of the Navy, has been inducted into the National Academy of Engineering, among
the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.
The Consumer
Electronics Association has honored Clark School alumnus Robert Briskman (M.S. ’61, EE),
co-founder of Sirius Satellite Radio, as a pioneering leader in the consumer technology industry
by inducting him into the Consumer Electronics Hall of Fame.
The Clark School
honored T. Paul Gaske (B.S. ’76, EE) with its 2012 Distinguished Engineering Alumnus award
for his professional accomplishments and service to the school and UMD.
Cynthia G. Jones (M.S. ‘96 and Ph.D. ‘01, nuclear engineering) has been appointed nuclear safety attaché
at the U.S. Mission to International Organizations in Vienna, Austria.
Enlu Zhou (M.S. ’08 and Ph.D. ’09, aerospace engineering [AE]) received an Air Force Office of Scientific
Research (AFOSR) Young Investigator Award for her proposal “Dynamic Decision Making under
Uncertainty and Partial Information.”
Mounya Elhilali (M.S. ’03 and Ph.D. ’04, EE) was selected for the
Office of Naval Research’s Young Investigators Program for her project “Active Listening: Closing
the Loop between Sensation, Perception and Behavior.”
Michael Gaither (M.S. ’10 and Ph.D. ’11, materials science and engineering [MSE]) won a National Research
Council Postdoctoral Research Associateship from the National Academies for “Increasing
MEMS Reliability by Controlling Fatigue Damage in Silicon.”
Christopher T. Jones (Ph.D. ’97, AE) was named a Black Engineer of the Year
(BEYA) at the 2012 BEYA STEM Global Competitiveness Conference. The conference and awards
are hosted by Lockheed Martin, the Council of Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Engineering Deans, and US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine.
Casey Grant (B.S. ’81, fire protection engineering [FPE]) has been named a “Fellow in the
Institution” by the Institution of Fire Engineers.

G. Lim (B.S. ’84, mechanical engineering [ME]) is the 2012 Asian American Engineer of the Year,
as named by the Chinese Institute of Engineers – USA.
Jackson Yang (B.S. ’58,
ME, M.A. ’62 and Ph.D.
’64, mathematics), founder and chief executive office of ATR Corporation, was named Maryland's
Clean Energy Entrepreneur of the Year.
David Curtis (M.S. ’75, civil engineering) was appointed to a three-year term on the California
Department of Water Resources Climate Change Technical Advisory Group.
Akhtar A.
Malik (M.S. ’88 and Ph.D. ’92, civil engineering) has been named vice chancellor
of National Fertilizer Corporation Institute of Engineering and Technology in
Pakistan.
Nikhil
Koratkar (M.S. '98 and Ph.D. '00, aerospace engineering) has been named
the John A. Clark And Edwart T. Crossan Professor of Engineering at Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute.
Mingyan Liu
(M.S. ’97
and Ph.D. ’00, EE) has been promoted to full professor of electrical engineering and computer
science at the University of Michigan. She also received a best paper award "In-Situ Soil
Moisture Sensing: Measurement Scheduling and Estimation using Compressive Sensing" at the
11th Association of Computing Machinery/Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers
Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks.
Sean Andersson (Ph.D. ’03, EE) has been promoted to associate professor
with tenure at Boston University.

Vicky Zhao (M.S. ’03 and Ph.D. ’04, EE) has been promoted to the
position of associate professor with tenure in electrical and computer engineering at
the University of Alberta, Canada.
Pradeep Sharma (M.S. ’00 and Ph.D. ’00, ME) was named Bill D. Cook
Chair of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Houston, which included a promotion
to full professor.
Ali Rangwala (M.S. ’02, FPE) has been promoted to associate
professor of fire protection engineering and granted tenure at Worcester Polytechnic
Institute.
Aswin Sankaranarayanan (M.S. ’08 and Ph.D. ’09, EE) will be
joining Carnegie Mellon University as an assistant professor in the spring of 2013.
Parag Banerjee (Ph.D. ’11, MSE) joined the faculty of the Department
of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science at Washington University in St. Louis.
Michelle
Lynne Mazurek (B.S. ’04, EE) has received a Facebook Fellowship for her work in
creating effective and secure forms of content sharing. She is a doctoral student
at Carnegie Mellon University.
Ravi Tandon (Ph.D. ’10, EE) received the best paper award in the
Communication Theory Symposium at the IEEE Globecom conference for “Discriminatory
Lossy Source Coding: Side Information Privacy.”
Ben Brooke (B.S. ’11, ME) is helping to establish a Baja SAE
program at Petroleum Institute. The program is modeled after the Terps Racing program
at the Clark School.
