Robert Briskman (M.S. ’61, electrical engineering [EE]), co-founder of Sirius Satellite Radio, received the 2007 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Aerospace Communications Award. The award recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of aerospace communications. Briskman was honored for his pioneering efforts in developing the Satellite Digital Audio Radio Service, known widely today as satellite radio. Briskman spoke on his role in the satellite radio industry as an invited speaker of the Clark School’s Whiting-Turner Lecture Series. |

Ryan Starkey, M.S. ’98 and Ph.D. '00, aerospace engineering (AE), received the 2008 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Lawrence Sperry Award in Aeronautics. Professor Mark Lewis served as Starkey’s advisor and supervisor. Starkey is an assistant professor and McAnally Faculty Fellow for Aerospace Engineering Sciences at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo. William Koffel, B.S. ’79, fire protection engineering, and a Clark School Board of Visitors member, has been appointed executive director of the American Association of Engineering Societies. Andrew J. Dick, Ph.D. '07, mechanical engineering (ME), joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Rice University as an assistant professor. His advisors were Professors Bala Balachandran and University President C. D. Mote, Jr. Lingze Duan, M.S. ’98 and Ph.D. ’02, EE, has accepted a position as assistant professor with the Department of Physics at the University of Alabama in Huntsville this fall. His co-advisers were Professors Julius Goldhar and Mario Dagenais, both in electrical and computer engineering (ECE). Alumna and current postdoctoral researcher Mounya Elhilal, M.S. ’03 and Ph.D. ’04, EE, has accepted a faculty position in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. Her advisor was Professor Shihab Shamma (ECE/Institute for Systems Research [ISR]), with whom she has also been working during her postdoctoral appointment. |

Azadeh Faridi, M.S. ’02 and Ph.D. ‘07, EE, joined the Universitat Pompeu Fabra Department de Tecnologia in Barcelona, Spain, as a faculty member. Faridi was advised by Professor Anthony Ephremides (ECE/ISR).
Leila Ladani, M.S. '05 and Ph.D. '07, ME, joined the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Utah State University as an assistant professor. Her advisor was Professor Abhijit Dasgupta (ME) . Simarjeet Saini, Ph.D. ’01, EE, has accepted a position as associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo in Canada. His advisor was Professor Mario Dagenais (ECE). Nathan Sniadecki, M.S. and Ph.D. '03, ME, joined the mechanical engineering department at the University of Washington in Seattle as an assistant professor. His advisor was Associate Professor Don DeVoe. Nathan Williams, Ph.D. ’07, ME, will join the Washington State University School of Architecture and Construction Management in Pullman as a tenure-track assistant professor in the spring. He successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation in November under the advisement of Professor Shapour Azarm. Fumin Zhang, Ph.D. ’04, EE, has accepted a position as assistant professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He will join the faculty at the recently established Savannah campus. He was advised by Professor P.S. Krishnaprasad (ECE/ISR). Before taking the position at Georgia Tech, Zhang served as a postdoc researcher at Princeton University, working with ECE alumna and Professor Naomi Leonard (Ph.D. ‘94, EE). Andrew Newman (Ph.D. ’99, EE) won the Hart Prize for Excellence in Development from the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. He received the prize for his role as principle investigator on the project, “Development: Tactically Responsive Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Management.” Newman’s advisor was Professor P.S. Krishnaprasad (ECE/ISR). Brittany C. Blueitt, B.S. ’06, ME, has entered her first year at Harvard University Law School where she will study intellectual property law. She was awarded a $30,000 scholarship for law school from the American Intellectual Property Association, as well as a $3,000 civil rights scholarship from the Earl Warren Legal Training Program.
