Admissions
Engineering is a limited enrollment major. It accepts a limited number of students and has admissions requirements beyond those needed for the university's general admission. Further, engineering students must undergo a review after earning 45 credits, to determine whether continuing in the major is permitted.

Selecting engineering does not affect students' chances for admission to the university. If students select engineering and do not meet the requirements, or if the maximum number of students has already been reached, students may be admitted to Letters and Sciences as appropriate, and re-apply to engineering from there.

There are three types of admitted engineering students (called "admits"): direct, internal or external transfer, and transfer with IAP.

Direct Admits
Direct admits are students admitted to engineering as first-time freshmen, having met all admissions requirements. After 45 credits, students must undergo a review to determine that "gateway requirements" have been met successfully and that continuing in engineering is permitted.

If a student is not directly admitted to engineering, he or she may be admitted to Letters and Sciences. Students in Letters and Sciences wishing to major in engineering may apply as internal transfer students.

Internal or External Transfer Admits
Internal transfer admits are students already at the University of Maryland who would like to change majors to engineering. External transfer admits are students applying to the University of Maryland from other institutions who would like to major in engineering. The admissions requirements for internal and external transfer admits are the same.

Internal transfer students apply to change their major to engineering through the Office of Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support. External transfer students apply to engineering through the general application for admission to the university, indicating engineering as the desired major. Based on that single application for transfer admission, students are first admitted to the university and then to engineering, based on limited enrollment standards.

Transfer Students Admitted to the
Interim Advising Program (I.A.P.)

When students apply to the University of Maryland and indicate engineering as their desired major, they are evaluated according to limited enrollment admissions standards. If they are missing one or more engineering requirements, but are accepted by the university for Letters and Sciences, they may participate in the Engineering Interim Advising Program. They will be helped by IAP advisors to fulfill their engineering requirements, or be assisted in selecting an alternative major. Factors such as minimum number of credits, GPA, and the successful completion of gateway courses will play a significant role in their gaining admission to engineering.
