Engineering Preview Programs for Prospective Students |
The A. James Clark School of Engineering conducts many activities throughout the year to provide students with opportunities to learn more about engineering. The Engineering Preview Program, held twice each spring, connects undergraduate engineering students with admitted high school seniors in a series of interactive panels, discussions, and hands-on activities. The Engineering Preview Program is held in the Jeong H. Kim Building, which is one of the newest research and education center on campus.
The Kim Building houses 31 state-of-the-art labs to provide students with interdisciplinary research areas, covering topics such as telecommunications, transportation, national security, healthcare, and product design and manufacturing. Student panels and seminar sessions cover common questions about major selection, student projects and competitions, student societies, studying abroad, campus facilities, internships, and more. Current undergraduates share their experiences so the admitted seniors have a chance to learn more about what to expect as an engineering student at Maryland.
The highlight of the program is the engineering challenge, where student groups, assisted by the current undergraduates, must design and construct a solution to an engineering problem. They witness first hand if their engineering solution works, and shows the problem-solving process of designing, planning, constructing, and testing a solution. The following day, students attend the campus open house events, allowing them to see the full spectrum of Maryland experiences available to them!
