Chima Ebinama

Chima is a senior Computer Engineering major at the University of Maryland-College Park. He is also a resident assistant of Hagerstown Hall, and an alumnus of the College Park Scholars Advocates for Children program. Chima has been a member of B.E.S. for four years and a member of N.S.B.E. for three years. He feels that his positive attitude, attention to detail, and ability to communicate with others makes him a good leader. Chima wants B.E.S. to be nationally recognized as the 2009-2010 N.S.B.E. Distinguished Chapter of the Year. He strongly believes that with the assistance of his executive board, such recognition is possible. This year, Chima plans on making a better B.E.S. by strengthening and increasing our involvement with P.C.I. chapters and other organizations within our community, fervidly encouraging and aiding our members academically, and creating a strong sense of ownership of the society within our members.

Vice President

Wesley Jarmon

Wesley Jarmon is currently a junior Electrical Engineering major at the University of Maryland College Park, and is also an alumnus of the College Park Scholars Environmental Studies program. Wesley has been a member of NSBE since high school and a member of BES since freshman year. Aside from NSBE and BES, Wesley is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), he is an Information Technology Consultant and Systems Management Coordinator for the Electrical and Computer Engineering schools (ECE) and Physics school, and he is also currently working towards a minor in Information Systems from the Robert H. Smith School of Business. After graduation, Wesley plans on going to law school to pursue a career as a licensed Patent Attorney. During the 2008-2009 school year, Wesley served as the Finance Chair and was a part of the NSBE National Distinguished Chapter of the year. As Vice President, Wesley plans on pushing the executive board to more success. This upcoming year, Wesley plans on emphasizing a focus on academic excellence, personal accountability, and strengthening our connections with our PCI chapters and various other societies and organizations.

Shakira McCall

Shakira McCall is a junior ecological technology design major at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is also a Community Assistant at Leonardtown Hall and also works at the Center of Minorities in Sciences and Engineering during the summer. She has been involved with NSBE and BES for a year now. As a secretary, she plans to make sure others and herself are implementing ideas that will advance both NSBE and BES to greater measures. Eventually she plans on discovering profound breakthroughs in consumer products that are cost-efficient and safe for the environment.

Nicholas Anuforoh

Nick Anuforoh is a junior Electrical Engineering major at the University of Maryland, College Park. He has been a member of BES/NSBE since fall of 2007. As steering chair, he plans to raise awareness of the BES constitution and continue the success of the various banquets that BES attends each year. His ultimate goal is to participate in pro bono work in technology services and solutions for non-profit organizations.

Treasurer

Joseph Isaac

Joseph is a Senior Computer Science student at the University of Maryland, College Park. He has been a member of BES and NSBE for four years. His involvement with BES and NSBE over the years has developed him into a leader and increased his network. As treasurer, he plans to provide financial assistance for initiatives and programs that will academically and professionally develop our members and positively impact our community. For leisure, he likes to socialize with friends, listen to music, play basketball, produce beats, dance, and watch movies.

Gregory Mitchell

Greg is a junior Electrical Engineering Major at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is also a member of the Inventis: Engineering Leadership Program, Hinman CEOs Program, and University Honors Program. After completing his first active year in BES last school year, Greg is more than ready to put his acquired skills to the test. This year, in collaboration with Nicole Thomas, the Executive Board, and the rest of the BES community, Greg plans on building and maintaining relationships with sponsors, in order to produce amble support for our society and its programs. It’s only a matter of time before we are crowned Distinguished Chapter of the Year once again!

Nicole Thomas

Nicole is a senior Computer Engineering major at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is a member of the QUEST Honors Fellows program, a College Park Scholar of Science, Technology, and Society, and a Supervisor of the Campus Recreational Services Intramural Sports Program. Nicole has been a member of the Black Engineers Society since her freshman year, last year she served as the BES Public Relations Chair. This year, as a Co-Finance Chair Nicole plans to help BES establish long-lasting relationships with corporations and individuals. Through these associations she looks forward to gaining the financial support and partnerships necessary to help the Black Engineers Society accomplish its goals for the year.

Whitney Ford

Whitney is a senior computer science major at the University of Maryland, College Park, a Quality Enhancement Systems and Teams (QUEST) Honors fellow, and the 2008-2009 Michael L. Cherry Memorial scholarship recipient. Whitney is also the former president of the Student Community for Outreach, Retention, and Excellence (S.C.O.R.E.) organization on campus, and a technician for the Information Technology sector of Resident Life. As Co-Programs chair, Whitney plans on using her unique experiences from S.C.O.R.E., QUEST, and the two years served as an active member with BES/NSBE to work with Jasmine Keene (Co-Programs Chair); in order to, maintain and develop new programs worthy of a National Distinguished Chapter of the Year!

Jasmine Keene

Jasmine Keene is a junior Mechanical Engineering major at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is also a math coach for the Math Success program, a Quality Enhancement Systems and Teams (QUEST) Honors fellow, and a member of the University Honors program. This is her second year being involved with BES and NSBE, and she plans to work with the entire executive board to contribute to yet another successful year. As Programs Co-Chair, Jasmine intends to contribute to the growth of this chapter by collaborating with Whitney Ford to implement programs that support all of our members professionally, academically, and socially.

Olabanji Olaniyan

Olabanji (Banji) Olaniyan is a junior intending to major in Chemical Engineering here at the University of Maryland. He has been a member with BES since his freshman year and a member of NSBE since high school. During the summer, he is a desk specialist with Conferences and Visitor Services and is also involved with Justice for D.C. Youth: Prison to College pipeline program. He enjoys talking, advising and being a good example for at risk youths in the D.C. area. As Historian, Banji plans to document the many events that BES has during the year but will not limit himself to that task. Banji plans on being involved in other committees within BES in order to contribute to yet another successful year and repeating for National Distinguished Chapter of the year.

Desiree Kendal

Desiree’ Kendal is a junior Civil Engineering major at University of Maryland, College Park. She is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the University of Maryland Gospel Choir. She has been a member of NSBE and BES for a year now and is looking forward to helping NSBE and BES reach their goals. As PCI Co-chair Desiree plans to get high-school students interested in Engineering by exposing them to various activities and giving them the opportunity to experience hands on projects to enhance their teambuilding, communicative, and thinking skills.

Nii Mante

Nii Mante is a senior Bioengineering major at the University of Maryland, College Park. He has been a part of BES since freshman year and apart of NSBE since sophomore year. He is also a member of the Society of Biological Engineers, and an undergraduate researcher for the Neuromuscular Bioengineering Laboratory. Nii plans on helping B.E.S to become the distinguished chapter of the year by aiding his fellow E-Board members in improving the academic standards and academic assistance in B.E.S. Upon graduation, Nii Plans on entering graduate school in Bioengineering with a focus on Drug Delivery and Biomaterials. He then plans to attain an MBA and work as a consultant.

Olufemi Sokoya

Olufemi Sokoya or “Femi” is a sophomore bioengineering student here at the University of Maryland. He has been a member of BES and NSBE for the past year and wants to play an extremely supportive role this year by increasing active membership and gearing member focus on the BES and NSBE mission …and repeating for National Distinguished Chapter of the Year. Femi is already making his mark here on campus with involvement in multiple programs. He is a member of the Gemstone Program, University Honors Program, Quest Program, and Reformed University Fellowship. He enjoys volunteering with the Strategies to Elevate People of Greater Washington D.C. (STEP DC) Program and getting good grades. Femi also wants to build strong relationships with people as he progresses in life and set a good example for other minority students.

Grad Student Coordinator

Sophoria Westmoreland

Sophoria (Nikki) is a doctoral student in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Maryland, College Park. She received her BS in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and a BS in General Egineering from Clark Atlanta University, both in May 2003. Sophoria also was an 8th grade Engineering Design Instructor at Grantham Academy for Engineering in Houston, Texas for 3 years prior to coming to Maryland. Her research area is design engineering education with a focus on cognition. She has been involved with NSBE since high school in 1996 and was a member of the Atlanta University Center Chapter of NSBE while a student at Clark Atlanta University. She is also a member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Society of Engineering Education, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. As Graduate Student Coordinator, her main goal is to increase the participation of graduate students in BES by working with her fellow e-board members to ensure that programs and activities are interesting and applicable to graduate students.Her future goals include becoming a professor in Mechanical Engineering and continuously participating in programs that provide resources for and increase minority participation in the STEM fields.

Leonardo Apolonio

Leonardo is currently a senior Computer Engineering major at the University of Maryland College Park. He has been a member of BES since his sophomore year. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and is also rush chair for Theta Tau, a co-ed professional engineering fraternity. After graduation, he plans on attending graduate school studying Digital Signal Processing, with a specific interest in the field of computer vision. As banquet chair, he plans on carrying the tradition of having a very successful end of the year awards ceremony that will recognize faculty and students hard work and inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.

Ayedee Manneh

Ayedee Manneh is a junior Bioengineering major at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is also a member of the Society of Biological Engineers, the University of Maryland Gospel Choir, and the University Honors Program. On campus, she works as a student assistant for the Office of Development and Alumni Relations in the Robert H. Smith School of Business. She has been a member of BES and NSBE for the past year as is looking forward to getting more involved with the organization this year. As Public Relations Chair, Ayedee plans on bringing more students from a variety of different disciplines to BES meetings and events so that they can witness all that the Black Engineers Society has to offer.

Telecommunications Chair

Mekias Yohannes

Mekias is a senior Computer Science and Graphic Design double major at the University of Maryland College Park. He is also a Resident Assistant, Help Desk technician for the Robert H. Smith School of Business, a webmaster for the Ethiopian Students Organization and a webmaster for The Common Thread Show, a local TV show on University of Maryland Television (UMTV). After graduation he plans to work in the internet and computer software industry for a couple of years and plans on going to graduate school for MBA in Project Management and E-Commerce. As the telecom chair, he plans on designing the back and front-end of the BES website. He plans on building a site that would not only present important information but also function as a tool to ease interaction between members, sponsors, and anyone who is affiliated with BES.
