WHAT: The A. James Clark School of Engineering inducts its 2008 honoree into the Innovation Hall of Fame, which celebrates technological innovations by Clark School alumni, faculty and friends and serves as an inspiration to students. Past members pioneered such technologies as the universal product code (bar code), pulse Doppler radar, the flexible coronary artery stent and retractable airplane landing gear.

WHO: Alex J. Severinsky developed the Hyperdrive power-amplified internal combustion engine power train for hybrid vehicles, a unique successor technology to the conventional internal combustion engine power train. Hyperdrive technology is used in the Toyota Prius and other well-known hybrid vehicles. Through the Clark School’s Technology Advancement Program, Severinsky founded PAICE Corporation to license Hyperdrive to hybrid vehicle manufacturers. Hyperdrive has made hybrid technology commercially viable and helped moderate increasing gasoline consumption.
