COLLEGE PARK, Md.—The A. James Clark School of Engineering leads the Mid-Atlantic region's public engineering school graduate programs.
The University of Maryland engineering school placed 15th nationwide (a two-spot jump since last year) in U.S. News and World Report's 2007 ranking of the nation's graduate engineering programs. It is No. 9 among publicly-funded universities in the country and tops the region encompassing Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
"Graduate engineering programs are major contributors to America’s technological and economic competitiveness," noted Clark School Dean Nariman Farvardin. "The Clark School has entered the ranks of the very best of these programs, helping to develop new technologies, new products, and highly trained engineers who will help to keep the nation at the forefront and the state of Maryland and mid-Atlantic region economically vibrant.
"For businesses and government agencies concerned with cutting-edge technology and economic development, and especially for companies considering locating here because of BRAC, we are a vitally important resource," Farvardin continued.
The Clark School's rise in the rankings comes during an eventful period in which the school raised more than $60 million from two private donors alone, launched a bioengineering program and opened a new state-of-the-art teaching and laboratory facility on the College Park campus.
In addition, the campus's Maryland NanoCenter, in which the Clark School is a major participant, received a No. 1 ranking from Small Times magazine and the school launched a masters program in engineering and public policy and received accreditation for its new project management programs, the first such accreditation for project management programs offered by an engineering school.
The rankings are based on surveys of engineering school deans and faculty members and specific evaluation criteria.
