ARCH & ADVANCE present annual Samuel J. & Ethel LeFrak Lecture by Sandra Rosenbloom, Urban Institute.

Dr. Rosenbloom will expose the conflicts between the needs of different members of the community, differences often hidden or ignored and that frequently break along age and class lines. Older people, for example, could benefit substantially from communities that are more walkable even if they are not also rich in stores, social and recreational facilities, and medical offices. Yet there is substantial unwillingness to retrofit suburban neighborhoods, the home of the majority of older Americans, with appropriate pedestrian facilities and parks if residents are "only" going to walk for recreation. Dr. Rosenbloom will explore the reasons why planners may be unwilling to expend resources on aging-in-place neighborhoods if those places are not also high density with mixed land uses.
