Great Expectations: Clark School Update
Richard N. Reed, B.S. '50, civil engineering, is supporting undergraduate students in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering through the establishment of the Richard N. Reed, Jr. Scholarship Fund. The fund was created with an initial gift of $100,000. Women in Engineering DREAM Conference, February 16, 2008
The Women in Engineering program at the Clark School invites high school students, parents and educators to the 2008 DREAM Conference. The event’s mission is to recruit, retain and advance women in engineering by providing a forum to reach out to students and share the wonderful innovations, applications and opportunities engineering has to offer. On February 16, 2008, more than 400 participants will be welcomed to the UM campus for a series of workshops, forums, demonstrations and discussions that will truly ignite interest in engineering.

Fire Protection Anniversary Book Now Available
The 50th Anniversary History Book for the Department of Fire Protection Engineering (FPE) is available for ordering. It lists the name of every person who has graduated from the Department of Fire Protection Engineering and includes photos of many of them. Photos from several FPE alumni reunions during the last ten years and all FPE classes held in spring 2007 are included. Please visit the department’s web site for more information and to place your order. The book is free with donations of $50 or more to the department.
Civil Engineering Retrospective On Sale Now
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is taking orders for its centennial coffee table book Reflecting on our Past. Limited copies will be available. The book will include pictures from 1908 to the present and will be mailed in March, just before the department’s centennial gala. Whiting-Turner Lectures Available Online

Supercomputing’s Next “Leap” Forward
The winner of the Clark School’s Supercomputer Naming Contest has been announced! Jaryd Malbin, a 21-year-old Connecticut resident, submitted the winning name: ParaLeap. For more information on the contest, the winner and the new technology, please read the story online.

David G. Mongan (B.S. ’71 and M.S. ’76, civil engineering) has been elected president of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Peter W. O’Hara Jr. (M.S. ’95, civil engineering) has been promoted to the role of central regional manager of ECS Mid-Atlantic, a geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering firm in Chantilly, Va.
Pam Siriwongpairat (M.S. ’01 and Ph.D. ’05, electrical engineering) and Professor K. J. Ray Liu (electrical and computer engineering) have co-authored a new book, Ultra-Wideband Communications Systems: Multiband OFDM Approach.
Leo Titus Jr. (M.S. ’02, civil engineering) has been appointed president of ECS Mid-Atlantic.
Timothy Wensus (B.S. '02, fire protection engineering) has married Aimee Catherine Walsh. The couple were married in Barrington, R.I. Wensus is a fire protection consultant for Schirmer Engineering in Framingham, Mass.
James Whang (M.S. ’71 and Ph.D. ’74, civil engineering) was featured in the media for the invention of an autonomous swimming cargo container.
