Waks Earns Prestigious PECASE Award
Edo Waks, assistant professor in the Clark School's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics, has been awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers in the early stages of their independent careers. His research interests include studying the application of photonic crystals to quantum information processing, as well as the use of photonic crystals for practical tools in optical telecommunication and sensing.
Wereley Honored by AIAA for Service
Norman M. Wereley, the Techno-Sciences Professor of Aerospace Engineering and associate chair of the Department of Aerospace Engineering, was honored on November 4, with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Sustained Service Award. The Sustained Service Award is presented to members of AIAA who show continuing dedication and who contribute sustained, significant service to the institute. Wereley was honored for his "sustained service to, and leadership in, the AIAA Adaptive Structures Technical Committee, as a member, as Technical Chair and General Chair of its Adaptive Structures Conference, and for technical publications."
Baz, Silverman Earn Lifetime Achievement Awards
Professor Amr Baz will receive the SPIE Smart Structures and Materials Lifetime Achievement Award for 2011. The award is presented to a distinguished scientist or engineer in the field of smart structures and materials to recognize significant service to SPIE as well as lifetime contributions to the field. Professor Emeritus Joseph Silverman (Department of Materials Science and Engineering) received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his fundamental and applied work in radiation physics and chemistry at the 9th International Symposium on Ionizing Radiation and Polymers.
Alumnus Inducted into the Innovation Hall of Fame
Robert Briskman (M.S. '61, electrical engineering), co-founder of Sirius Satellite Radio, was inducted into the Clark School's Innovation Hall of Fame last month for developing key technologies that make efficient satellite radio possible. View Briskman's panel in our virtual Hall of Fame online.
Meet the New Members of the Clark School Engineering Alumni Chapter Board
Doyin Adewodu (M.Eng. '10) is a senior consultant at Clark School Corporate Partner Booz Allen Hamilton in McLean, Va. In his spare time he enjoys sports, traveling, entrepreneurship, and technology. He is looking forward to serving on the Engineering Alumni Chapter Board of Directors.
Jeff Marcus (B.S. '75, mechanical engineering) also holds a master's degree from Michigan State University. He works for the National Transportation Safety Board where he is involved in the investigation of airplane crashes, and implementation of safety improvements identified during the investigations. Jeff is also an adjunct associate professor at the University of Maryland University College. He lives in Ellicott City, Md., with his wife and two sons, one of whom is an aerospace engineering sophomore at the Clark School.
Kevin Schoonover (B.S. '06, aerospace engineering) works for Clark School Corporate Partner ATK as a preliminary design engineer and a business development manager. As a member of the alumni board, Kevin hopes to show students how the alumni association fosters strong relationships between students and the engineering industry.
Great Expectations Spotlight: Corporate Partner L-3 Names Inaugural Fellows
L-3 Communications, a major contractor in defense and homeland security, Clark School Corporate Partner, and recent donor to the school of $1 million in fellowships, scholarships, and program support, has named five Clark School students to win L-3 Graduate Research Fellowships for the 2010-2011 academic year. Ph.D. students Chad Ropp (electrical and computer engineering [ECE]), Jessica Sheehan (mechanical engineering), Kevin Galloway (ECE and Institute for Systems Research [ISR]), Keith Gregorczyk (materials science and engineering and ISR) and Greg Gremillion (aerospace engineering and ISR) make up the inaugural class of L-3 Graduate Research Fellows.To learn more about the Great Expectations campaign and how you can make a difference through scholarships, fellowships, competitions and student activities, please contact Leslie Borak.
Clark School Alumni Spotlight: Cozy Up With Alumnus Wheatley's Poems
Clark School alumnus Thomas Wheatley (B.S. '60, electrical engineering) is a Maryland Poet Laureate finalist and published poet. He published Fireside Musings in 2003. Thomas' brother Frank Wheatley Jr. (B.S. '51, electrical engineering) is a member of the Clark School's Innovation Hall of Fame.
