Pines Testifies Before Congressional Committee

Darryll PinesClark School Dean Darryll Pines testified before the Committee on Science and Technology, Subcommittee on Research and Science Education, of the U.S. House of Representatives last week. His speech advocated the inclusion of engineering concepts within K-12 education, both to inspire students with engineering’s ability to improve the world and to prepare students for rigorous college-level programs such as the Clark School's.

You're Invited: Final Fall Whiting-Turner Lecture November 19

S. Tien Wong, chairman and CEO of Opus8, Inc., will present the final lecture of the Fall 2009 Whiting-Turner Business and Entrepreneurial Lecture Series on Thursday, November 19, at 5 p.m. in the Kim Building lecture hall. The first lecture, "Moving Forward with the Nuclear Renaissance in the United States," by George Vanderheyden, president and CEO of UniStar Nuclear Energy, LLC, is available to watch online.

Black & Decker Alumni: Join Us on December 3

Great Expectations Spotlight: Luncheon Connects Scholarship Donors and Recipients

The Clark School welcomed more than 100 scholarship donors and recipients to the Kim Engineering Building for the school's annual scholarship luncheon on November 11. The event provided scholarship recipients an opportunity to thank their benefactors over lunch in the Kim Building rotunda. Clark School Recognizes Outstanding Commitment

On October 29, Clark School faculty and staff gathered to honor ten staff retirees, both living and deceased, with Engineering Outstanding Commitment Awards. The honorees included Suzanne K. Hickes, William S. Levine, Thomas J. McAvoy, Jon H. Orloff, Carol A. Prier and Edward M. Sybert.

Chi T. Do (B.S. '08, fire protection engineering) is an engineer with AREVA NP Inc. in Fort Worth, Texas.

Sebastian Engelmann (Ph.D. '08, materials science and engineering) published a book on plasma etching, Plasma-Surface Interactions of Advanced Photoresist Systems, which outlines improvements to nanoscale device manufacturing.

Dan Fallon (B.S. '05, electrical engineering) is a senior consulting engineer with Convergence Consulting Technology in Glen Burnie, Md.

Nitin Gupta (M.S. '07, aerospace engineering) is director and CEO of IDeA Research in Pune, India.

Jeff Goldberg (B.S. '99, biological resources engineering) is founder and chief executive of Cali Bamboo in San Diego, Calif.

Stephanie (Laning) King (B.S. '06, aerospace engineering) is a project engineer at Naval Air Systems Command in Patuxent River, Md.

Can Korman (B.S. '85, M.S. '87 and Ph.D. '90) has been appointed associate dean for research and graduate studies at George Washington University's School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Meng Yi Lin (B.S. '03, mechanical engineering) is an engineering manager at Mars Air System in Gardena, Calif. She is a registered Professional Engineer and LEED AP.

Ana-Luisa Ramirez (B.S. '05, electrical engineering) received a Luminary Award at the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference earlier this fall. Luminary awardees are recognized for their leadership, collaboration and initiative in programs and research. Ramirez is a lead systems engineer at Northrop Grumman in Baltimore.

Daniel Markus (B.S. '06, chemical engineering) married Emily Singer (B.S. '06 and M.S. '08, hearing and speech) on November 6.

Stephanie (Laning) King (B.S. '06, aerospace engineering) married Martin King (B.S. '06, mechanical engineering) in September 2008.

In Memoriam

Over the past month, we were saddened to learn of the deaths of Jack Howard Jacobs (B.S. '49, mechanical engineering), George McGowan (B.S. '51, mechanical engineering) and C. Robert Varndell (B.S. '46, civil engineering).
