Update from Your Engineering Alumni Chapter — Golf Tournament Recap
My name is Dan Fallon (B.S. '05, electrical engineering) and I’m treasurer of the Engineering Alumni Chapter Board of Directors. I also served as golf tournament chair this year. Even in this tough economic climate, we had a great turnout and generous corporate sponsorships for the 2009 A. James Clark School of Engineering Alumni and Friends Golf Outing. This annual event helps us raise money for our scholarship fund and directly impacts students of the Clark School. I would like to thank all of those who joined us this year and would like to encourage anyone who is interested in playing, donating, or helping to organize the 2010 event to contact me (clarkalumnigolf@gmail.com) or Josey Simpson (josey@umd.edu).
Great Expectations Spotlight: Lin Innovation Award Goes to Baras, Yu
Professor John Baras (ECE/ISR) and his former student, Paul Yu, have received the Jimmy Lin Award for Innovation and Invention. They are the first recipients of the award. The two researchers were awarded the prize for their invention, "Wireless Communication Method and System for Transmission Authentication at the Physical Layer." In 2008, Professor Emeritus Hung C. "Jimmy" Lin made a generous gift to create the Lin Fund in order to promote innovation among ECE faculty, staff, and students by stimulating, encouraging and rewarding the invention and patenting process. Professor Lin was an accomplished inventor and teacher who passed away earlier this year. To learn more about the Great Expectations campaign and how you can make a difference through scholarships and fellowships, please contact Leslie Borak.
