Mote Nominated to be Next NAE President

MoteCurrent Clark School professor of mechanical engineering and former UMD president C.D. (Dan) Mote, Jr., is the sole nominee for the presidency of the National Academy of Engineering beginning July 2013 for a six-year term.

Clark School #14 in World Research Ranking

The Academic Ranking of World Universities poll of engineering schools lists the Clark School at #14 in the world this year. The latest U.S. News & World Report survey ranks the Clark School's undergraduate programs 23rd nationally and 11th among public programs.

Gamera Team Continues to Impress

Gamera IIIn the last month, the Clark School's human-powered helicopter team achieved a flight that lasted 65 seconds and another that reached over 9 feet in height, bringing them closer to claiming the AHS Sikorsky Prize.

Clark School Students Win National Energy Competition

Students from the Clark School's Department of Mechanical Engineering, led by faculty advisor Yunho Hwang, won the U.S. Department of Energy's Max Tech and Beyond Design Competition.

Be Inspired: Innovation Hall of Fame and White Symposium

X2Join us on November 8 at 4:30 p.m. when we induct alumnus Ashish Bagai '90, '92, '95 into the Clark School's Innovation Hall of Fame. The ceremony will be followed by the White Symposium on Engineering Innovation, focusing on the impact of the helicopter in today's society.

Faculty Members Take On New Responsibilities

Starting this fall, the following Clark School faculty members are taking on new administrative responsibilities:

  • Alison Flatau is the Clark School's associate dean for research.
  • Peter Kofinas is the Clark School's associate dean for faculty affairs and graduate programs.
  • Nuno Martins is director of the UMD Maryland Robotics Center.
  • S.K. Gupta is program director of the National Science Foundation's Robust Intelligence Cluster.

Baker to Receive System Staff Award

The University System of Maryland (USM) will recognize Pat Baker, program management specialist in the Clark School's Department of Fire Protection Engineering, with a 2011-2012 USM Board of Regents Staff Award for Outstanding Service to Students.

Ashley Korzun (B.S. '06, aerospace engineering) received her Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from Georgia Tech and is working at NASA Langley Research Center on research relevant to planetary entry, descent and landing.

Christopher Lombardo (B.S. '05, electrical engineering and physics) is assistant director for undergraduate studies at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in Cambridge, Mass.

Sophoria Westmoreland (M.S. '11 and Ph.D. '12, mechanical engineering) has accepted a position as assistant research professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the U.S. Naval Academy.
