Josey Simpson ’84 Wants to Get to Know You!

Josey SimpsonJosefina P. Simpson, '84, was recently named Director of Alumni Relations for the Clark School of Engineering. Josey earned her B.S. from the Robert H. Smith School of Business, majoring in marketing. Prior to joining the Clark School, she spent the majority of her career in the hospitality field, specializing in client relations and membership marketing. Josey is thrilled to have the chance to meet our wonderful Clark School alums, strengthen the Clark School’s alumni chapter participation, help achieve the school’s crucial scholarship, professorship, facility and program goals through the Great Expectations capital campaign, and—more personally—give back to the university that prepared her for her career. Clark School Rises in the Rankings

The U.S. News & World Report 2009 edition of "America's Best Colleges" ranks the Clark School's undergraduate program 21st in the nation, four spots up from last year's ranking. The Clark School ranks 8th in the nation among public engineering programs. The Clark School's undergraduate aerospace engineering program was up one spot, ranked 9th among similar programs. Entrepreneurship programs offered by the Clark School and the Smith School also received a spot in the Top 10, ranking 9th.

Hinman CEOs Alumnus Singal Recognized by BusinessWeek

Anik Singal, CEO of Affiliate Classroom Inc., a privately held company in the University of Maryland’s Technology Advancement Program incubator and a leading publisher of educational tools for interactive marketers, is named as one of BusinessWeek.com’s Best U.S. Entrepreneurs 25 and Under on its Web site. Singal, a University of Maryland Hinman CEOs alumnus, along with the other 24 entrepreneurs, were selected from among hundreds of nominees interviewed by BusinessWeek.com’s staff.

Alumnus Gordon England Kicks Off Whiting-Turner Lecture Series, October 16

Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England (B.S. '61, electrical engineering) will be the first speaker in this fall's Whiting-Turner Business & Entrepreneurial Lecture Series. His talk, "Looking Ahead," will be held on October 16 at 5 p.m. in the Kim Building Lecture Hall. Alumnus Stephen Ruffa (B.S. '82, aerospace engineering) will speak on Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. Ruffa is the author of Going Lean: How the Best Companies Apply Lean Manufacturing Principles to Shatter Uncertainty, Drive Innovation, and Maximize Profits.

Engineering Alumni Reunion, October 23

University of Maryland classes of 1958 and 1968 are welcome back to campus for a reunion celebration on October 23rd at 6 p.m. Clark School alumni and friends are invited for an evening of reminiscing about the past and learning about the future. Tour the state-of-the-art Kim Engineering Building while enjoying hors d’oeuvres at this welcoming reception. Please RSVP by Monday, October 13.

Meet the Next Innovation Hall of Fame Inductee, October 30

Alex J. Severinsky, inventor of the Hyperdrive power-amplified internal combustion engine power train used in the Toyota Prius and other hybrid vehicles, is the 2008 inductee into the Clark School's Innovation Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m. on October 30 in the Kim Building. The ceremony will be immediately followed by the White Symposium on Innovation (see below).

"Intellectual Property: How Well Does the System Protect the Individual Innovator?" October 30

The 2008 Charles and Helen White Symposium on Engineering Innovation will be held on October 30 at 5 p.m. in the Kim Engineering Building Lecture Hall, immediately following the induction of this year's Clark School Innovation Hall of Fame nominee. The focus of this year's symposium is on protecting the intellectual property rights of inventors. All are welcome to attend and the event will also be webcast live for the first time ever.

WTTG Fox 5 broadcast live from the Neutral Buoyancy Research Facility and from the Kim Building Plaza earlier this month. The Washington, D.C., affiliate interviewed students from Robotics@Maryland. Video is available on our web site.

Great Expectations: Clark School Update

Kohout FamilyThe Kohout Family is full of Terp spirit. Brothers Andrew Kohout (B.S '06, fire protection engineering, B.S. '06, mechanical engineering), Nick Kohout (B.S. '98, electrical engineering, '00 M.S. electrical engineering), and Paul Kohout (B.S '00 electrical engineering, M.S. '02 electrical engineering) are all Clark School alumni. But the family tradition doesn't end there. Sister Stephanie Kohout (B.S. '02, early childhood education) and the brothers' wives, Rachel (Trinite) Kohout (B.A. '05, criminology and criminal justice), Chris (Sandusky) Kohout (B.S. '00, architecture) and Jessie (Matthews) Kohout (B.S. '01, biological science) are all UM alumni as well! By the way, Andrew isn't done adding to his Clark School credentials. Joseph Barron (B.S. '07, mechanical engineering) is engaged to be married to Dianne Black this November. Barron is a mechanical engineer for Manitowoc Crane Group in Shady Grove, Pa.

M. Judson Brown (B.S. '82, mechanical engineering) is a senior engineer with Sack & Associates Consulting Engineers, PLLC, in their mechanical division.

Philip C. "Pete" Cooper (B.S. '31, civil engineering) is the recipient of this year's Salisbury Award from the Rotary Club of Salisbury, Md., in recognition of his work as a civil engineer in the Salisbury area. He has served as the city's engineer and director of public works, in addition to being involved in many transportation projects on the Eastern Shore and elsewhere in Maryland.

Rebecca Currano (B.S. '97, mechanical engineering) is pursuing a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at Stanford University. Previously, she worked for Black & Decker designing power tools (see also "Mystery Photo," above).

Steve Eberly (B.S. '87, mechanical engineering) is a senior program manager at Ingersoll Rand/Thermo King Corporation.

Anthony E. Giampapa (B.S. '07, mechanical engineering) married Allison M. Voigt (B.S. '07, elementary education) in June in the Memorial Chapel on campus. Giampapa is a project manager for John J. Kilin.

Jamie Leigh Gill (B.S. '02, civil engineering) is engaged to Josh V. Frank. Gill, who also received a B.S. in computer science from Towson University in 2003, works for URS Corp. in Hunt Valley, Md.

Robert J. Haskins (B.S. '07, electrical engineering) is working for Bechtel in Knoxville, Tenn.

Thomas O. Heikkinen (B.S. '91, civil engineering, and M.Eng. '97) is the water utility general manager for the city of Madison, Wis. Previously, he was chief of plant operations for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.

Alejandro Hermoza (B.S. '85 and M.S. '86, mechanical engineering) has been appointed vice president of community relations for Buenaventura, Peru's largest publicly traded metals mining company.

Gerad D. House (B.S. '03, mechanical engineering) received his M.S. in mechanical engineering from Johns Hopkins University this past May. He is a project manager with the Applied Physics Lab at Johns Hopkins.

Nia Kelley (B.S. '00, electrical engineering) earned an M.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, with a concentration in software engineering in 2007. She works for IBM as a project office manager.

Marcus LaChapelle (B.S. '01, biological resources engineering) received a doctorate of pharmacy degree from the University of Maryland at Baltimore in 2007 and runs Broadneck Pharmacy with his father in Broadneck, Md.

Richard M. Liu (M.S. '88, electrical engineering, and MBA ' 91) is vice president of engineering for NavAsic Microelectronics, Inc.

Michael S. Nye (B.S. '03, civil engineering) has earned his professional engineering license from the State of Maryland.

Andrew Radcliffe (B.S. '03, civil engineering) has also passed the State of Maryland professional engineering exam.

Rafael Rodriguez-Cambero (M.Eng. '07) was recently listed in the 2009 edition of Who's Who in America.

Peggy White (B.S. '84, civil engineering) is director of design for civil engineering consulting firm christopher consultants, ltd., of Columbia, Md. White is licensed in four states and is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Capital Building Industry Association.

Over the past month, we learned of the deaths of Robert "Bob" W. Cotton Jr. (B.S. '73, electrical engineering) and George W. Cooper (B.S. '86, electrical engineering).
