Great Expectations: Clark School Update

The family of Mickey Dale has created a four-year scholarship in her memory to help recruit talented freshmen majoring in mechanical engineering, bioengineering, electrical engineering or computer engineering. Dale was a University of Maryland University College employee and the wife of a Clark School alumnus. Memorial Scholarship Created To Honor Derek Hans Blume ’03

A new scholarship has been created in memory of Derek Hans Blume, a 2003 computer engineering alumnus who passed away in his sleep on July 29, 2006, at the age of 25. To honor Derek's memory and assist students at his alma mater, his family and friends established an endowed fund to support undergraduate students enrolled in Maryland’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Sponsors/Coaches Needed for Design Course

The mechanical engineering capstone design course, ENME 472, is seeking sponsors and coaches for student team projects for the fall 2007 semester. This course focuses intensely on design for innovation and on prototyping, with student teams working on actual design problems for sponsor corporations or individuals. Sponsors may be corporations, startup companies, independent inventors, faculty researchers, etc. Coaches will advise teams on technical issues relevant to their projects, and should have five years of experience or more. Innovation Hall of Fame and White Symposium,
October 4

We hope you can join us as we induct Raymond J. Krizek, M.S. ’61, civil engineering, into the Clark School’s Innovation Hall of Fame on October 4 at 4:30 p.m. in the Kim Engineering Building for his work in geotechnical engineering. The induction ceremony will be immediately followed by the 2007 Charles and Helen White Symposium on Engineering Innovation—“Innovation: Enhancing and Protecting Our Environment.”

Reunion for the Classes of ‘47, ’57 and ‘67,

Correction: 2nd Annual “Project Perry” Benefit Golf Tournament, October 19

The tournament to benefit the Perry Laudenslager Memorial Scholarship fund will take place at the Potomac Ridge Golf Course on October 19 at 9 a.m. (not on October 12, as advertised in last month’s e-newsletter). Whiting-Turner Lecture Series Fall Speakers Announced

Please join us for the Fall 2007 Whiting-Turner Lecture Series as it kicks off with Ray Johnson, senior vice president and CTO of Lockheed Martin Corporation and a member of the Clark School’s Board of Visitors, on the evening of Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. in the Kim Engineering Building lecture hall. On November 29, Robert Briskman, Clark School alumnus and co-founder of SIRIUS Satellite Radio will give the next lecture, also at 5 p.m. in the Kim Building lecture hall. Deadline Extended for the Supercomputer Naming Contest

Electrical and computer engineering Professor Uzi Vishkin is inviting the public to propose names for a new supercomputer prototype he has invented that could be a model for the next generation of personal computers. The winning name will earn its submitter $500! The deadline has been extended to Sept. 30.

John Araneo, B.S. ’72, civil engineering, has joined Chas. H. Sells, Inc.’s New Jersey office as the local director of transportation infrastructure and facilities.

Alexander Bobowiec, B.S. ’07, fire protection engineering, has been hired by Code Consultants Inc. as a project consultant.

Sean Bond, B.S. ’89, aerospace engineering, has been appointed president of BAE Systems’ Platform Solutions business.

Dan Fisher, B.S. ’76, civil engineering, has been named vice president of new business development and marketing for GHSP, a supplier of mechanical and mechatronic control systems.

Oscar Garcia, B.S. ’69, electrical engineering, will step down as dean of the North Texas College of Engineering at the end of this academic year. Garcia is founding dean of the college, established in 2003.

Richard Halstrick, B.S. ’80, aerospace engineering, succeeded his father as president and CEO of Scotland Rack, a provider of bulk storage solutions.

Ken Isman, B.S. ’86, fire protection engineering, served as editor and primary author for the newly released book Layout, Detail and Calculation of Fire Sprinkler Systems. The book was published by the National Fire Sprinkler Association and is available through their resource center.

William E. Koffel Jr., B.S. ’79, fire protection engineering, has been appointed executive director of the American Association of Engineering Societies. Koffel is also a member of the Clark School’s Board of Visitors.

John “Jack” Lesko, B.S. ’87, mechanical engineering, has been named special assistant to the vice president for research at Virginia Tech. Lesko is a professor of engineering science and mechanics.

Daniel J. Mathias, B.S. ’89, fire protection engineering, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Bello Machre, an organization that provides homes, support and care to those with developmental disabilities.

Jim Montgomery, B.S. ’70 & M.S. ’74, civil engineering, was interviewed by Baltimore CBS affiliate WJZ regarding the Minneapolis bridge collapse for his expertise on bridges.

Steve Perez, B.S. ’97, electrical engineering, has become web outreach coordinator for the United Federation of Teachers in New York City.

Gordon B. Richman, B.S. ’84, chemical engineering, has been appointed vice president of regulatory compliance for Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, a New Zealand-based medical device company. He will be based at their U.S. headquarters in Irvine, Calif.

Eric Schade, B.S. ’92, mechanical engineering, was recently promoted to senior engineer by Constellation Energy, where he works for the Engineering Response Unit.

William J. Schaefer, B.S. ’70 & M.S. ’72, electrical engineering, has been appointed vice president of business development for Northrop Grumman Corporation’s Integrated Systems sector.

Bennett Wise, B.S. ’97, chemical engineering, has been appointed manager of south east operations for JM Hyde Consulting, Inc.
