Dean Farvardin to Become UM Provost
Clark School Dean Nariman Farvardin has been named senior vice president for academic affairs and provost of the University of Maryland, College Park campus, effective July 1. Farvardin succeeds the current provost, William Destler, who also served as dean of the Clark School in the 1990s. Destler is leaving for the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he will become president this summer.
Great Expectations: Clark School Donors Exceed $100M Milestone
The Clark School has raised more than $100 million towards its goal of $185 million in the Great Expectations campaign. In announcing this milestone, Dean Nariman Farvardin noted it will take "10,000 gifts" to meet the school's ultimate campaign goal. Funds are being raised for undergraduate scholarships and especially graduate student fellowships, new research programs, professorships and teaching programs, and new facilities. Wanted: Golfers for the 4th Annual Engineering Alumni & Faculty Golf Tournament
The Engineering Alumni Chapter is seeking foursomes for the 4th Annual Engineering Alumni Chapter Golf Tournament on May 17. Alumni Association Honors Five Clark School Alumni & Friends
The university's alumni association honored five Clark School alumni and friends during its annual awards gala on April 14. Emilio A. Fernandez, B.S. '69, electrical engineering, and a member of the Clark School Board of Visitors, was presented with the Engineering Alumnus of the Year Award. Sudhitham Chirathivat, B.S. '71, electrical engineering, was presented with the university's international alumnus award. Linda Gooden, also a member of the Clark School Board of Visitors, was presented with the alumni association's Honorary Membership. Michael D. Griffin, Ph.D. '77, aerospace engineering, received the President's Distinguished Alumnus Award. Marilyn Berman Pollans, former associate dean of the Clark School and a current Board of Visitors member, received the Tyser Gottwals Award.

Destler Farewell Fund
The university has created "The William W. Destler Endowed Scholarship in Engineering" to honor the outgoing provost as he departs for the Rochester Institute of Technology. This fund will provide annual awards for outstanding students enrolled in the Clark School. To make a contribution to this fund, please use the online form. Gifts of $250 will be matched one-to-one; gifts above will get a $250 match.
1st Annual Fischell Festival Inspires, Connects
The Fischell Department of Bioengineering hosted the 1st Annual Fischell Festival, a celebration of bioengineering’s potential to improve life for millions of people, on May 3. Lecturers including inventor Robert Fischell discussed the future of bioengineering and biomedical devices. The event brought together students and faculty from the Clark School and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Milke Selected as Top Terp
James Milke, associate professor and associate chair in fire protection engineering, was selected as a TIAA-CREF "Top Terp" earlier this year and has also been named this year's grand prize winner, netting $1000 for the department.
Baltimore Alumni Reception, Porcari Draw Large Crowd
The Clark School would like to thank the 150 alumni who came to the 4th Annual Baltimore Engineering Alumni Reception in April to hear a special presentation by The Honorable John Porcari, secretary of transportation for the state of Maryland. Stay tuned for details about next year's event.
Terps QB Hollenbach Signed by Washington Redskins
Sam Hollenbach, a senior mechanical engineering major and Terps quarterback for the 2005 and 2006 seasons, has been signed by the Washington Redskins. Hollenbach earned honorable mention All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors this year and was the MVP of the 2006 Champs Sports Bowl.
Mechanical Engineering's Megill Leads Lacrosse Success
Senior defender and mechanical engineering undergrad Ray Megill, a two-time
All-American, is pivotal to the Terps' lacrosse success this season as one of the top
defenders in the nation. Megill had the signature game of his career this spring in
Maryland's 8-7 win at Navy in double-overtime. Off the field Megill has been spending time
working on the UM Human Powered Submarine Project.
University of Maryland Executive Education Program
The Clark School is offering its second Executive Education Program, "Strategic
Marketing to Drive Real Results," to be offered on June 1. The program provides
attendees with a fresh, results-driven perspective on the relationship between
marketing, sales and branding. Visit the program's web site for more

You're Invited: Fire Protection Alumni, Boston NFPA Event, June 5
Fire protection engineering alumni are invited to a reception in Boston on June 5 at
the Seaport Hotel (across from the Convention Center) while they are in town for
the NFPA meeting. Please fill out and return the RSVP form no later than May
23 if you plan to attend.
Battle of the Beltways: Baseball Game at Camden Yards, June 14
Bring your family and enjoy an evening of baseball as the Baltimore Orioles take on the Washington Nationals. Join other Clark School of Engineering alumni, faculty, staff and their families for a pre-game picnic and game. Cost is $33 per person. Harley Mann (B.S. '65, electrical engineering) has moved to Las Vegas after retiring. He and his wife now volunteer at a non-profit daycare and kindergarten. Previously, Harley lived for 44 years in Maryland, 30 of which were spent working on NASA projects at Goddard Space Flight Center.
Peter H. Michael (B.S. '66, electrical engineering) announces that his farm "Cooling Springs" in Frederick County, Md., has been named to several national, state and local historic and Underground Railroad registers. The farm was operated as an Underground Railroad safehouse by Peter's great-great-grandparents and their children.
Richard "Dick" Radlinski (B.S. '65 & M.S. '72, mechanical engineering) taught a special one-week course on heavy vehicle mechanics at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom in April. Dick lectured on the design and testing of heavy vehicle braking systems.
Duane L. Rehmeyer (B.S. '79, fire protection engineering) has joined Baker Engineering and Risk Consultants, Inc. (BakerRisk), which is headquartered in San Antonio. Duane will work for the company from his home base in southeastern Pennsylvania.
Janie Tiedeman (B.S. '88 & M.S. '90, civil engineering) was recently promoted to project manager responsible for leading the transportation planning group at URS Corporation in their Hunt Valley, Md., office. Janie is also vice president of the Women's Transportation Seminar Baltimore Chapter.
The Clark School Mourns the Passing of…
Over the past month we learned of the passing of alumni Byron L. Carpenter (B.S. '40, mechanical engineering) and Jeffrey Jay Ellison (B.S. '70, electrical engineering), as well as William N. Drohan, a former instructor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and Willie Webb, a former staff member in reliability engineering.
