Deadline Extended! Nominate a Teacher or Colleague to the Innovation Hall of Fame

The Clark School is now accepting nominations for the Innovation Hall of Fame. If you know of a Clark School faculty member or alum (or other engineer closely associated with the school) whose technological innovations have advanced the field or had a positive impact on society, please submit your nomination for this year's award by March 31, 2008.

Great Expectations: Clark School Update

A $180,000 gift from the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA)-Bethesda Chapter has provided $1,500 scholarships to 29 students at the University of Maryland, including 25 students from the Clark School. Clark School Advisors Elected to National Academy of Engineering

Clark School Board of Visitors member Mal O'Neill and Aerospace Engineering Advisory Board member Wanda Austin were elected to the National Academy of Engineering last month. O'Neill is former CTO of Lockheed Martin and Austin is president and CEO of Aerospace Corporation.

Aerospace Grads, Professor Sweep AHS Awards

Aerospace engineering alumni Michael Torok (M.S. '86 and Ph.D. '89) and Edward C. Smith (M.S. '90 and Ph.D. '92) have been named technical fellows of the American Helicopter Society. Inderjit Chopra, Alfred Gessow Professor of Aerospace Engineering, was selected as an honorary fellow.

You're Invited: Mechanical Engineering Research Review Day, March 14

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) will host its annual Research Review Day on March 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Kim Engineering Building. This year’s event will focus on "Innovation and Entrepreneurship," and will include a research poster display, laboratory tours and a keynote lecture by Jeong H. Kim, president of Bell Laboratories. Panel presentations will follow by Rear Admiral Millard Firebaugh, ME Professor of Practice, and Pat Hearn, ME Visiting Researcher from Ballard Power Systems.

You're Invited: ISR Systems Symposium, April 10

The Institute for Systems Research is holding its 2008 Systems Symposium on Thursday, April 10, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center. This free event includes a panel and technical talks by ISR alumni, a keynote address by Pradeep Khosla (ISR Strategic Advisory Committee member and dean of the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University), a buffet lunch and a showcase of more than 100 research posters and demonstrations by ISR faculty and students. Scrub In: The 2nd Annual Fischell Festival of Bioengineering, April 10-11

Join us on April 10-11 for the second annual Fischell Festival. The event will feature: on April 10, a Whiting-Turner Lecture by William Brody (Johns Hopkins University; see below); on April 11, a real-time medical procedure broadcast live from the UM School of Medicine; talks by Christoph Hergersberg (GE Global Research), Heinrich Kolem (Siemens Medical Solutions) and David R. Fischell (Angel Medical Systems), and the opening of the new Fischell Wing of the Kim Engineering Building.

Prove Your Engineering Pride - Join the Order

The Order of the Engineer was created to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer. The Clark School will be hosting its annual Order of the Engineer ceremony to induct new members at 7 p.m. on April 11, 2008, in the Grand Ballroom of the Stamp Student Union. You're in Business: Spring Whiting-Turner Lectures

Johns Hopkins University President William Brody will open the Spring 2008 Whiting-Turner Lecture Series and the 2nd Annual Fischell Festival of Bioengineering on April 10. The following week, Fred Schaufeld, chairman and founder of NEW Consumer Service Companies, Inc., will speak on April 17. Both lectures will take place at 5 p.m. at the Kim Engineering Building.

Clemens Mathias Arnold (M.Eng. '05) married Aubrey Dane Stock at a ceremony in Handshuhsheim, Germany, last fall.

Steven D. Behrens (B.S. '81, aerospace engineering) is a logistics management specialist with the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command in Patuxent River, Md.

Vincent H. Berg (B.S. '73 and M.S. '77, civil engineering) has received the "Watershed Hero" award for his work with the Middle Potomac Tributary Team of the Maryland Bay Restoration Program.

Naveen Bhat (Ph.D. '91, chemical engineering) has been named vice president of sales for Asia and Japan by Ixia, a provider of performance test systems for IP-based infrastructure and services.

Kimberly Brown (M.S. '98 and Ph.D. '05, chemical engineering) reports that her company, Amethyst Technologies, has joined the bwtech@UMBC incubator. Amethyst Technologies provides management, implementation and execution of current good manufacturing practice compliance systems.

Richard Decker (B.S. '81, mechanical engineering) has been appointed technical director of the Army's Edgewood Chemical Biological Center at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.

Mounya Elhilali (M.S. '03 and Ph.D. '04, electrical engineering) is an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

Josh Elvander (B.S. '94, aerospace engineering) is a project manager with Bluefin Robotics Corporation in Cambridge, Mass. Bluefin Robotics manufactures autonomous underwater vehicles.

Nadine Gregoire (B.S. '05, mechanical engineering) is a mechanical engineer with BAE Systems.

Kiran Hebbar (M.S. '96, mechanical engineering) has been promoted to partner by Valhalla Partners.

Brian Kiviat (B.S. '85, aerospace engineering) has been named special assistant for technology development and transition to the assistant secretary for research, development and acquisition of the Navy.

Daniel Jacob Laskowitz (B.S. ' 05, mechanical engineering) married Jill Marie Thomas in a ceremony in New Providence, N.J., last year.

Nancy Linton (B.S. '98, electrical engineering) received the 2008 Black Engineer of the Year Award for Outstanding Technical Contribution in Government sponsored by USBE and Information Technology magazine. She is a systems engineer at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

Christopher Lombardo (B.S. '05, electrical engineering and physics) is a graduate research assistant at the University of Texas at Austin in their electrical engineering department.

Brent Machado (B.S. '03, chemical engineering) is a development engineer with W. R. Grace & Co. in Baltimore.

Nicholas Meade (B.S. '03, computer engineering) reports he is married with two children – a son, Brent, and a daughter, Brielle. He is a Baptist minister.

Christie Minami (B.S. '99, environmental engineering) earned her professional engineering license in 2006 and has been working for the Maryland State Highway Administration's Green Highways Initiative, a partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Christopher Murphy (M.S. '90, mechanical engineering) has joined Kilpatrick Stockton as a partner in their intellectual property department. He will be a part of the patent litigation team.

Michelle Murray (B.S. '00, aerospace engineering) has been appointed program manager for the Federal Aviation Administration's Office of Commercial Space Transportation Experimental Permit program for research and development of reusable launch vehicles.

Rodney Oddoye (B.S. '02, electrical engineering) received a Modern Day Technology Leadership Award at the Black Engineer of the Year awards ceremony last month. Oddoye works as a senior engineer for BGE.

Robert Pearce (B.S. '97, civil engineering) is a project manager for Whiting-Turner Contracting Company in Charlotte, N.C.

William J. Schaefer (B.S. '70 and M.S. '72, electrical engineering) has been appointed vice president of business development for integrated systems at Northrop Grumman.

Courtney Schultz (B.S. '01, fire protection engineering) has been hired as a senior fire protection engineer by Commercial Construction Consulting, Inc. in Boston, Mass.

David E. Scott (B.S. '85, civil engineering, and M.Eng. '00) has been appointed director of public works for the city of Baltimore.

Brian T. Stanley (B.S. '98, civil engineering, and M.Eng. '03) has been promoted to vice president and shareholder of SMA Consulting Structural Engineers in Richmond, Va.

Brian Timberlake (B.S. '99, chemical engineering) has earned a Masters in quantitative and computational finance and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Georgia Tech. He also married Allison Yasitis last year.

Dan Tuchler (B.S. '79, electrical engineering) has been hired as vice president of strategy and product management of BLADE Network Technologies in Santa Clara, Calif.

David A. Vess (B.S. '00, mechanical engineering, and M.Eng. '04) is a test engineer for Northrop Grumman.

Kuansan Wang (M.S. '89 and Ph.D. '94, electrical engineering) is a principal researcher for Microsoft.

Jessie Yung (B.S. '96 and M.S. '99, civil engineering) is a program manager for the Federal Highway Administration.

Michael T. Zuckerman (B.S. '78, electrical engineering) has joined I-many as senior vice president for marketing. I-many provides advanced contract lifecycle management solutions for managing corporate commitments.
