The Clark School is now accepting nominations for the Innovation Hall of Fame. If you know of a Clark School faculty member or alum (or other engineer closely associated with the school) whose technological innovations have advanced the field or had a positive impact on society, please submit your nomination for this year's award by March 10, 2008.

Great Expectations: Clark School Update

Electrical and computer engineering (ECE) Professor Emeritus Hung C. "Jimmy" Lin has given $100,000 to his department for the creation of the Jimmy Lin Fund for Innovation and Invention. The goal of the gift is to promote innovation among ECE students, staff and faculty by stimulating, encouraging and rewarding the invention and patenting process. Aerospace Engineering Academy of Distinguished Alumni Inducts Five New Members

The Department of Aerospace Engineering recently honored five alumni who have made significant contributions to the field: Michael B. Deitchman (B.S. '73), Bernard S. Loeb (B.S. '60), David G. Matuska (B.S. '81 and M.S. '83), Mark W. Nixon (B.S. '83 and Ph.D. '93) and Mark B. Tischler (B.S. '78 and M.S. '79).

Transforming Energy Lecture, February 18

Peter N. Pintauro of Case Western University will speak on "In Pursuit of the Ideal Fuel Cell Membrane: How Close are We?" as part of the Transforming Energy Lecture Series at 2 p.m. in the Kim Engineering Building on February 18.

EcoEngineering, March 8

For prospective students: Join us for a fun-filled day creating engineering solutions for alternative energy. Learn about the majors and programs you can experience at Maryland. Compete in a design challenge that will test your knowledge! Current engineering undergraduate students will lead discussions and highlight their projects, and you will participate in team activities to see engineering in action. Registration costs $20 and the deadline is February 29.

Save The Date! 2nd Annual Fischell Festival of Bioengineering, April 10-11

Learn what the future holds in bioengineering and biomedical devices, and how engineers and healthcare providers can work together to achieve that future. Join us on April 10-11 for the second annual Fischell Festival. The event will feature a real-time medical procedure broadcast live from the UM School of Medicine, talks on medical imaging and the opening of the new Fischell Wing of the Kim Engineering Building.

Spring Whiting-Turner Lecture Series Schedule Announced

Johns Hopkins University President William Brody will open the Spring 2008 Whiting-Turner Lecture Series and the 2nd Annual Fischell Festival of Bioengineering on April 10. The following week, Fred Schaufeld, chairman and founder of NEW Corporation, will speak on April 17. Both lectures will take place at 5 p.m. at the Kim Engineering Building.

Rajeev K. Arora (B.S. '00, fire protection engineering) is now executive vice president of Arora Engineers, Inc. in Woodbridge, N.J.

Andrew Baker (B.S. '93 and M.S. '95, aerospace engineering) graduated from the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School, Class 114, and the U.S. Executive Leadership Development Program Class of 2004. He was deployed to Iraq with the 113th DC Air National Guard in 2006 and 2007, and is now home with his wife, Jennifer, and children, Jocelyn and Nathaniel.

Daniel D. Blake (B.S. '90, civil engineering) is president and CEO of CourseMax, a provider of online training management software.

John J. Buckley, Jr. (B.S. '83, mechanical engineering) has been appointed vice president of engineering and manufacturing in electronic systems at Northrop Grumman.

Kristin Carter (M.S. '02, mechanical engineering) is an officer at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Jeffrey H. Chang (B.S. '04, mechanical engineering) has joined Pratt and Whitney as an aerodynamic/thermal engineer.

Brenda Cornish-Freeman (B.S. '87, chemical engineering, and MBA, '91) has joined the TBS network as chief marketing officer for Turner Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media. Freeman is a member of the Clark School's Women in Engineering Advisory Board.

Greg Crowley (M.S. '96, mechanical engineering) has been appointed to the Schererville, Ind., Board of Zoning Appeals. He is president of Crowley Engineering Group, LLC.

Neal B. Eberly (B.S. '93, aerospace engineering) is a systems engineer at Wyle Laboratories in Houston, Texas, where he works on human spaceflight hardware.

Jon Forst (B.S. '93, aerospace engineering) was recently awarded his second patent for a new system that dynamically determines the eligibility of credit card customers. In 1999, he received his first patent for a system to allow for electronic funds transfers over the phone. He has a third patent pending.

Sathya Ganesan (M.S. '04, mechanical engineering) married Kavita Kumar in Toronto in December. Ganesan is a technology development engineer for Intel in Arizona.

Joseph Hartmann (B.S. '90, M.S. '95 and Ph.D. '05, civil engineering) co-authored the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report detailing defects in the design of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis last summer. (See Holt, below.)

Richard W. Haviland (B.S. '75, civil engineering) has been named senior vice president for construction and major projects at Duke Energy.

Reggie Holt (B.S. '89 and M.S. '94, civil engineering) is the other co-author of the NTSB report detailing defects in the design of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis last summer. Holt is a senior structural engineer for the Federal Highway Administration. (See Hartmann, above.)

Jeffrey K. Kirkpatrick (B.S. '07, aerospace engineering) is a flight test engineer for DCS Corp.

Daniel Landau (B.S. '06, electrical engineering) is a consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton.

Thomas H. Levi (B.S. '82, electrical engineering) is a systems analyst.

Lawrence A. McKenna (B.S. '82, fire protection engineering) is employed with the U.S. Fire Administration.

David Mihok (B.S. '06, mechanical engineering) is a liaison engineer with Boeing.

Vahid Reza Ramezani (B.S. '89, M.S. '94 and Ph.D. '01, electrical engineering) is an artist (in addition to being an engineer) whose work has been displayed at the Isfahan Museum of Modern Art.

Gordon B. Richman (B.S. '84, chemical engineering) is vice president for regulatory compliance of Fisher & Paykel Healthcare in Irvine, Calif.

Jeffrey C. Robbert (B.S. '99, civil engineering) has been hired as an associate with engineering firm Erdman Anthony in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Alan Rosenberg (B.S. '83, chemical engineering) has been named president of Business Only Broadband, a carrier-class wireless provider for the financial sector and other large enterprise clients.

Kenneth E. Savisaar (B.S. '95, mechanical engineering, and M.E. '00) is now branch head of drive systems and propellers for the U.S. Navy in Patuxent River, Md.

Roland Sorensen (B.S. '72, mechanical engineering) is a process engineer for Fasloc, Inc. He adds that his stepson, Aaron Pimentil, graduated "best in show" with a B.A. in computer graphic design from the Art Institute in Houston, Texas.

Zachary Stern (M.S. '86, electrical engineering) is a patent attorney with Oblon, Spivak, McClelland & Neustadt, P.C.

Brian D. Vandervort (B.S. '06, fire protection engineering, and B.A. '06, criminology and criminal justice) is a fire protection engineer with EBL Engineers in Bethesda, Md.

Jingtao Wang (M.S. '02, chemical engineering) has been appointed an associate professor in the School of Chemical Engineering at Tianjin University in China.

Andrew F. Weisfield (B.S. '96, fire protection engineering) has been hired as a fire protection engineer at Burt, Hill in Pittsburgh.

The Clark School Mourns the Passing of…

Over the past two months we learned of the passing of alumni Roy S. Eckert (B.S. '43, mechanical engineering), Robert Brannan (B.S. '50, electrical engineering), John A. Dean (B.S. '73, electrical engineering), Walter Rutherford (B.S. '50, mechanical engineering) and Clifford Thompson (B.S. '60, electrical engineering).
