Dean PinesThe spring 2014 semester was a time of great activity and achievement for our Clark School of Engineering community at the University of Maryland. The spring brought new partnerships and professorships, distinguished awards for faculty, staff, and students, legacy displays that pay tribute to our student competition teams, and many other notable developments.

Former Clark School Student Iribe Sells Oculus VR for $2B to Facebook, Speaks at UMD's Inaugural Bitcamp Hackathon
Oculus VR imageThe University of Maryland hosted Bitcamp, the university’s first Major League Hackathon, on April 4-6, in Cole Field House. Over 500 college students from across the country attended the 36-hour summit, working in teams to create new apps, games, and programs. Oculus VR CEO and former Clark School student Brendan Iribe spoke at the event, which took place just a short time after the sale to Facebook was announced.

WaterShed imageUMD-Designed WaterShed On Display at Pepco Sustainability Center
The Pepco WaterShed Sustainability Center opened to the public following a dedication ceremony for media and other guests on Earth Day, April 22, 2014 at the Pepco Service Center in Rockville, Md. The new WaterShed Sustainability Center includes the energy-efficient house designed and built by students and faculty from the University of Maryland that won first place in the 2011 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon on the National Mall. Pepco Holdings, Inc. acquired the house in 2012 and worked with the student team to relocate it to the 5,000-square-foot site adjacent to Pepco’s Service Center in Rockville, Md.

Reliability Engineering imageUMD Celebrates 25 Years of Excellence in Reliability Engineering
On April 2, 2014, the Center for Risk and Reliability hosted a 25th Anniversary Celebration of the University of Maryland's Reliability Engineering Education Program. The University of Maryland (UMD) was the first university in the U.S. to offer a degree granting program in reliability engineering, and it continues to be one of the flag ship programs for the field.

Clark School's Programs Highly Ranked
The University of Maryland’s Clark School of Engineering continues to maintain its high rankings in a variety of different categories, including U.S. News and World Report's 2015 Best Graduate Schools survey, U.S. News and World Report's Best Online Programs, and Engineering Programs with the Best Return on Investment by Best Value Schools. The Clark School was ranked 18th on the Best Value Schools list, with an average 30 year return on investment (ROI) of $934,800.

In the first half of 2014, we have already seen significant growth and success at the Clark School, and we are ready to accomplish even more in the second half of the year.
