Two Clark School Faculty Members Receive Presidential Early Career Awards
PECASE Award WinnersPresident Obama has named two University of Maryland Clark School of Engineering faculty members as recipients of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Sarah Bergbreiter and Aerospace Engineering Associate Professor Derek Paley, both of whom hold joint appointments with UMD's Institute for Systems Research, were selected for the PECASE award, the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.

Three Clark School Faculty Earn NSF CAREER Awards
Three faculty members from the Clark School were awarded National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Awards for their innovative research projects NSF CAREER Award Receipientsinvolving flame resistant material design, the conversion of methane into alternative fuels, and high-performance water treatment for drinking water and renewable energy production. Assistant Professor of Fire Protection Engineering Stanislav I. Stoliarov was awarded a 5-year, $412,418 NSF CAREER Award for “Understanding Flammability of Charring Polymers.” A proposal to use a new ceramic membrane to improve the conversion of methane into alternative fuels has also earned Assistant Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Dongxia Liu a 5-year, $400,000 NSF CAREER award.
Civil and Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Baoxia Mi was awarded a 5-year, $400,000 NSF CAREER award for her proposal for "Graphene-enabled Synthesis and Surface Modification of Water Separation Membranes."

BioE's Chris Jewell Named Outstanding Young Engineer
The Maryland Science Center and the Maryland Academy of Sciences named Clark School Fischell Department of Bioengineering (BioE) Assistant Professor Christopher M. Jewell the state's 2013 Outstanding Young Engineer. He will be presented with the award's Allan C. Davis medal and a cash prize.

Bergbreiter One of '25 Women in Robotics You Need to Know About'
Assistant Professor Sarah Bergbreiter (ME/ISR) was included in the "25 women in robotics you need to know about" list compiled by the robotics website Robohub.

Chopra Receives Inaugural Wang Chicun Award
Aerospace Engineering Professor Inderjit Chopra was awarded the inaugural Wang Shicun Award at the 2nd Asian/Australian Rotorcraft Forum (ARF) and the 4th International Basic Research Conference on Rotorcraft Technology at Tianjin, China on September 12, 2013. Chopra received the award for his "outstanding work in education, research and development of rotorcraft technology.”

Elaine OranOran Receives APS 2013 Fluid Dynamics Prize
Department of Aerospace Engineering Elaine Oran won the American Physical Society (APS) 2013 Fluid Dynamics Prize. Oran was selected for her "seminal contributions to the understanding of reactive flows through computational simulations, especially the deflagration-to-detonation transition in gases and supernovae."

Bar-Cohen Receives 2014 IEEE Components, Packaging and Manufacturing Technology Field Award and ASME 75th Anniversary Medal
Mechanical Engineering Distinguished University Professor Avram Bar-Cohen won the 2014 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Components, Packaging and Manufacturing Technology (CPMT) Award. Established in 2002, the CMPT Field award honors significant developments in components, electronic packaging or manufacturing technologies. Bar-Cohen received the award for his contributions to thermal design, modeling and analysis along with his research on heat transfer and liquid-phase cooling. He will also receive the 75th Anniversary Medal of ASME’s Heat Transfer Division during the 2013 Summer Heat Transfer Conference, which will be held from July 14-19 in Minneapolis.

Fourney Selected to Receive 2014 Frocht Award
Associate Dean and Keystone Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering William Fourney has been selected to receive the 2014 M. M. Frocht Award from the Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM). The Frocht Award recognizes "outstanding achievement as an educator in the field of experimental mechanics," and is presented annually.

Sprangle Awarded 2013 Maxwell Prize
The American Physical Society (APS) awarded Dr. Phillip Sprangle (ECE/IREAP/Physics) with the 2013 James Clerk Maxwell Prize in Plasma Physics for pioneering contributions to the physics of high intensity laser interactions with plasmas, and to the development of plasma accelerators, free-electron lasers, gyrotrons and high current electron accelerators.

UMD's Abts Featured in Discover Magazine
The University of Maryland's Research Associate Professor Leigh Abts' (Bioengineering/College of Education) effort to expand the next generation of engineers is featured in Discover magazine. The article, titled "E is for Engineering: Empowering students to design a more sustainable future," focuses on the need to improve K-12 engineering curriculum as well as create a test to measure outcomes of engineering education.

Bentley Elected ACS Fellow
Fischell Department of Bioengineering professor and chair William E. Bentley (joint, Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research) has been elected to fellowship in the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world's largest scientific society.

Chellappa named 2013 ACM Fellow
Minta Martin Professor of Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Chair Rama Chellappa (ECE/CS/UMIACS/CFAR) was named a 2013 Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). He was recognized for contributions to image processing, computer vision, and pattern recognition.

Chris JewellBioE's Chris Jewell Named Outstanding Young Engineer
The Maryland Science Center and the Maryland Academy of Sciences have named Clark School Fischell Department of Bioengineering (BioE) Assistant Professor Christopher M. Jewell the state's 2013 Outstanding Young Engineer after demonstrating vision, technical excellence and leadership; and having overcome obstacles to their work in order to have a positive impact on people.

Martinez-Miranda Receives American Physical Society's Bouchet Award
Materials Science and Engineering Associate Professor Luz J. Martínez-Miranda has received the American Physical Society's Edward R. Bouchet Award. The award, established to promote the participation of underrepresented minorities in physics, recognizes minority physicists who have distinguished themselves and made significant contributions to the field.

Prof. Ed Ott Selected for 2014 Julius Edgar Lilienfeld Prize
Prof. Ed Ott (ECE, Physics, IREAP) has been selected to receive the 2014 Julius Edgar Lilienfeld Prize. Awarded annually by the American Physical Society, the Lilienfeld prize recognizes "outstanding contributions to physics by a single individual who also has exceptional skills in lecturing to diverse audiences." Ott is a pioneer of research in nonlinear dynamics and chaos. 

Professor Peter Sandborn Elected ASME Fellow
Mechanical Engineering Professor Peter Sandborn was elected ASME Fellow, a distinction awarded to ASME members who have made significant engineering achievements. Sandborn was recognized for his contributions in the life-cycle cost modeling for systems field that “have been particularly instrumental in refocusing significant portions of the systems community to include a view of the system life cycle within their design and strategic planning activities.”

Duncan Receives Wilson H. Elkins Professorship
Department of Mechanical Engineering Professor James Duncan was awarded the Wilson H. Elkins Professorship for 2014. The professorship was awarded to support and expand Duncan’s work in the Hydrodynamics Laboratory, and for engaging graduate, undergraduate, and high school students on cutting-edge research.

Chang Delivers Keynote Speech at 10th International Conference of Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies
Department of Civil Engineering Professor Gang-Len Chang delivered a keynote speech at the 10th International Conference of Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies on "Challenges and Suggestions to Transportation Professionals in Asia." The conference was held in Taipei on September 9-12, 2013.
