(9/11/1982 – 8/13/2009)

Nickolas B. Pippen passed away in August after a fourteen month battle with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. Nick graduated from the Chemical Engineering program at University of Maryland, College Park in 2005. As a student, Nick was a highly active and passionate member of the newly formed Engineers Without Borders-USA chapter at Maryland. As a young professional, Nick was a resourceful and energetic professional mentor for the Johns Hopkins University EWB-USA chapter, an active member in the Chesapeake Professional Chapter, and a member of the South East Region’s Technical Advisory Committee.
As a student, Nick's dedication had a tremendous impact on the growth of the Engineers Without Borders-USA, UMCP chapter. While at Maryland, Nick served as the chapter’s first fundraising chair. In this position, Nick created a strong foundation for the fundraising chairs that would follow in his position. He established the chapter’s annual fundraising trip to the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. In addition to his contributions as fundraising chair, Nick was a travel member of the chapter’s first Ecuador project in Patadel.
After his graduation, Nick continued to volunteer as a professional mentor for the Johns Hopkins chapter and as a Technical Advisory Committee member for the South East Region of EWB-USA. Most recently, Nick traveled to Honduras on an assessment trip in pursuit of a new project that he worked to develop even after his diagnosis.
Nick was an enthusiastic volunteer and a dear friend to both the EWB community and those whom he impacted abroad. Nick’s dedication, spirit, and love for helping those around him will continue to be felt in the Engineers Without Borders community.
