International Opportunities

Resources for international opportunities related to EWB:

There is a growing demand for engineering graduates with international experience. Chances are that in your career as an engineer, you will either work with a company that conducts business globally or you will work on an international engineering project team. Employers are seeking applicants with an awareness of global business practices, cross-cultural communication skills, and language fluency. You can prepare yourself to work in the global marketplace by participating in one of the Clark School's study abroad programs. During your study abroad, you will engage in experiences that will develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities that so many employers seek, giving you an edge over other engineering students in the job market.

In addition, most students report that studying abroad is the experience of a lifetime! You will have the chance to travel the world, meet new people, learn about another culture and share your own culture.

Undergraduate Opportunities:

  • UMD Study Abroad Office: The Study Abroad Office provides general and individual advising for any student interested in studying abroad. They hold general advising sessions throughout the semester. See their website for more details.
  • Office of Undergraduate Recruitment and Special Programs: This office, run through the engineering school, is in charge of recruiting and retaining students in the Clark School. They support the engineering study abroad programs throughout the year as well as the Minor in International Engineering specifically designed for engineering students to study abroad.

Graduate Opportunities:

  • NSF: East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students: The US National Science Foundation East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) provide U.S. graduate students in science and engineering: 1) first-hand research experience in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore or Taiwan; 2) an introduction to the science and science policy infrastructure of the respective location; and 3) orientation to the society, culture and language. The primary goals of EAPSI are to introduce students to East Asia and Pacific science and engineering in the context of a research setting, and to help students initiate scientific relationships that will better enable future collaboration with foreign counterparts. The institutes last approximately eight weeks from June to August.
Awardees will receive a $5,000 stipend, an allowance of up to $2,500 for international travel, and will be supported to attend a pre-departure orientation in the Washington, D.C. area. Foreign co-sponsoring organizations will provide additional support to cover EAPSI students’ living expenses abroad during the period of the summer institutes, and will provide an orientation to the science environment and culture(s) of each location.

  • The UNESCO Institute for Water Education, in Delft, Netherlands, offers four Masters Programmes with 14 specialisations in the fields of water, environment and infrastructure, with a focus on poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Students may also study for a PhD through this program.

  • The University of Loughborough (UK) Water Engineering and Development Center (WEDC) offers graduate degrees and certificates. WEDC provides education, training, research, and consultancy relating to the planning, provision, and management of infrastructure for development. It focusses on activities that improve the health and well-being of people living in both rural areas and urban communities, integrating technological, environmental, social, economic, and management inputs for effective and sustainable development. It now forms the core of the Institute of Development Engineering, established in 1995 to reflect the growth of new areas of professional interest which have broadened well beyond the boundaries of water and sanitation engineering.
