Our General Body meetings are held on the second Monday of every month at 5:30pm once in room ENGR 1179.

Spring 2008:

  • Feb 11 @ 5:30pm in ENGR1202: We discussed the project implementations in Burkina Faso (lighting) and Brazil from this past winter break. Ecuador and Burkina Faso (water) teams also gave an update on their progress thus far and meeting times for the semester. Returning and new students are ALL welcome.
  • March 3 @ 5:30pm in ENGR1179: We had Dr Chambers from the Department of Anthropology come and speak to us.
  • April 14 @ 5:30pm in ENGR1179: We discussed the national conference, project updates, and future projects. We also held nominations for candidates for next year's Executive Board
  • Fall 2007:

  • Sept 10 @ 5:30pm in ENGR1202: Overview of what project teams did this summer and how you can get involved
  • Oct 8 @ 5:30pm in ENGR1179: Professor Etlin, a distinguished Professor from the Architecture department, who is currently teaching an honors seminar about Sustainability gave a presentation on his work.
  • Nov 12 @ 5:30pm in ENGR1179:
    Dr. John Grayzel, a former senior official with the United States Agency for International began his tenure as Baha'i Chair for World Peace in early January. Dr. Grayzel succeeds the inaugural holder, Dr. Suheil Bushrui, who retired after holding the position since 1992.
  • The Professional Chapter Meetings are usually held directly after the General Body meeting in ENGR 1179 at 7pm. See dates above under General Body meetings. Both Professional engineers and students are welcome to attend.

    Burkina Faso Lighting Phase II:
    THIS Thursday May 1, EGR 1108 at 8:00 pm
    Attention! Interested in getting involved this summer? Due to special circumstances, the second phase of the Burkina Faso solar lighting project is on a very accelerated schedule. This is a new project for our chapter and incorporates the solar energy technology we've utilized in past Burkina Faso Projects with a new system to recharge portable lanterns. Design work and planning on this unique project is scheduled begin this week and continue through the summer, with potential travel at the end of August. A team of highly dedicated students are needed for this project to be successful. If you will be living in the area this summer and are willing to commit to this project now, after finals and through the summer, please attend the first team meeting this Thursday in EGR 1108 at 8:00 pm.     Peru Co-Project Leader:
    There are currently a few potential projects that are being considered in a village near Cuzco, Peru. The village has 3 primary concerns: to acquire potable drinking water, an irrigation system, and cheaper electricity. Project leaders will be investigating these potential projects to select the most viable option for an EWB project. Please realize that because of the time line of the project (assessment this summer, implementation Summer 2009) students that apply cannot be graduating any earlier than May 2009. Also, students cannot be a project leader while holding another executive board position.
    For this application, please write a personal statement about a page in length explaining why you would be an effective and organized leader. Any past leadership positions, EWB experience, and relevant information should also be included in the letter along with your name, major, and year. All statements should be emailed to Sarah Ness (ness.sarah@gmail.com). If you have any questions please contact Sarah as well.

    EWB Northeast Regional Conference:
    On October 5-7 at Rowen University in Glassboro, NJ, EWB hosted a Northeast regional conference. The University of Maryland Chapter plans attended and gave a presentation on "Lessons Learned".

    Annual EWB Golf Tournament!
    Every year the EWB chapter at the University of Maryland holds a golf tournament. This year on October 4 at the UMD golf course the Professional Chapter held it with much success. Click Here for a PDF file with more information.


    Fundraising Opportunities:

    Bonnaroo
    We are looking for students to volunteer this summer at the music festival, Bonnaroo which is held in Tennessee. The festival is June 12-15. If interested, please email Sarah Ness (ness.sarah@gmail.com) for more details.
