The Innovation Hall of Fame
Images of past inductees

February 16, 2007

Dear Clark School Alumni, Faculty and Friends:

Inspiring students—inspiring anyone—is a challenge. But right here in the Kim Engineering Building we have the perfect inspirational tool for our young engineers, and indeed for our professors, staff and corporate and government partners: the Innovation Hall of Fame.

When you bring someone to the Hall, you are surrounded by accounts of exceptional people, inventors of new ways to communicate, improve health, move people and products, protect our nation. I encourage you to take advantage of this resource. Bring a student or colleague here, and use these stories to show what engineers can accomplish and the great Clark School tradition the Hall represents.

And I ask you to go still further. Participate in the Hall's traditions right now by nominating an engineer who deserves to join the ranks of the great—a Joseph Weber, Harry Smith, or Rajiv Laroia. An Emilio Fernandez or George Laurer.

The criteria are simple. The Hall features innovations that have had a positive impact on society, including:

—  A working product, system or design

—  A comprehensive body of technical work that has advanced the understanding of the engineering profession.

Nominees may be:

—  Clark School alumni

—  Clark School faculty whose innovations were developed primarily at the Clark School

—  Alumni of other University of Maryland schools who have a meaningful relationship with the Clark School.

I ask you to give serious thought to those who should be honored, and submit your nomination for this year's award by March 9, 2007. This is your chance to provide a new source of inspiration to our students, and honor the great work of your colleagues and friends.

Sincerely,

Nariman Farvardin
Professor and Dean
A. James Clark School of Engineering

P.S. I hope you will join us in fall 2007, when our next Innovation Hall of Fame member—possibly your nominee—will be inducted in conjunction with the White Symposium on Engineering Innovation. We will send invitations when the date is determined.
