Great Expectations: The Campaign for Maryland
On October 20, the University of Maryland announced a campaign to raise $1 billion for student scholarships, faculty recruitment, physical spaces and other resources. The Clark School hopes to raise $185 million towards that goal for initiatives like a new engineering student center, graduate student fellowships, and the Keystone program (which ensures that our most fundamental courses are taught by our best teachers). For more information on how you can participate, please send email to support-clarkschool@umd.edu.
Fire Protection Engineering Celebrates 50th Anniversary
More than 300 alumni, faculty, staff, students and guests of the Department of Fire Protection Engineering helped celebrate the program’s 50th anniversary in October. Festivities included a ribbon-burning ceremony to open the department’s new space in the J.M. Patterson Building, a gala event and tours of the new facilities.
A New Hall of Fame Honor for Kim
Washingtonian magazine and the Greater Washington Board of Trade have named Jeong H. Kim, Clark School benefactor, alumnus and professor of practice in electrical and computer engineering (and a member of the Clark School’s Innovation Hall of Fame), to the Washington Business Hall of Fame for 2006. Kim, Ph.D. ’91, reliability engineering, is being honored for his business savvy in establishing telecomm company Yurie Systems and for his leadership at Lucent’s Bell Labs.
Laroia Inducted into Innovation Hall of Fame
University President C.D. Mote, Jr. helped induct alumnus Rajiv Laroia (M.S. ’89 and Ph.D. ’92, electrical engineering) into the Clark School Innovation Hall of Fame on October 16 for his innovations in telecommunications. Laroia then joined Barry West of Sprint Nextel and Andrew Viterbi of QUALCOMM for the White Symposium on Engineering Innovation, which can be viewed online.
Engineering Alumni Reunion
Engineering alumni from the classes of 1956, 1966 and 1981 enjoyed a special evening celebration at the Kim Engineering Building during Homecoming weekend. Guests reconnected with former classmates and learned about the many changes at the Clark School from Dean Farvardin. A special “thank you” to class representatives G. Ron Weisgerber (B.S. '56 civil engineering), Bill Leasure (B.S. '56 mechanical engineering) and Norine Walker (B.S. '81, '83 urban studies and civil engineering) for their support and effort in making this year’s event the best ever!
It’s time to start planning for the next year! If you are a member of the classes of 1957, 1967 or 1982 and want to help plan the next reunion, please contact Cornelia Kennedy, director of alumni relations at 301.405.2150 or ckennedy@umd.edu.
