New Energy Lecture Series Kicks Off This Friday!

The new “Transforming Energy” Lecture Series will begin this Friday, September 15. Jefferson Tester of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will deliver the inaugural lecture at 2 p.m. in the Kim Engineering Building lecture hall.

Annapolis Engineering Alumni Networking Reception

Join Dean Nariman Farvardin and engineering alumni for an evening of networking at the beautiful Annapolis Yacht Club on Wednesday, September 27, at 6:30 p.m. Enjoy reconnecting with your former classmates and make new connections with engineers in your field. Innovation Hall of Fame and White Symposium, October 16

Join us on October 16 at 4:30 p.m. in the Kim Building’s Innovation Hall of Fame as we induct 2006 honoree Rajiv Laroia, M.S. ’89 and Ph.D. ’92 electrical engineering. Following the ceremony, Dr. Laroia will participate in the Charles and Helen White Symposium with keynote speaker Barry West of Sprint Nextel and Andrew Viterbi of QUALCOMM.

Fall Whiting-Turner Lecture Series Speakers Announced

The Fall 2006 Whiting-Turner Business and Entrepreneurial Lecture Series will kick off November 16 with Evan Jones of Digene. The second lecture of the semester will be delivered by Kathy Hill of Cisco Systems on December 7. Lectures are held at 5 p.m. in the Kim Engineering Building Lecture Hall.

FPE Alumni Reunion and 50th Anniversary Celebration

Fire protection engineering alumni – please join us October 13-15 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the department! Activities include a happy hour on October 13, plus tours, lunch, a panel discussion on FPE education, the anniversary gala and golf over the weekend. Cost: $75 per person, $50 per student. Solar Decathlon Sneak Peek, September 21

Join the Maryland Solar Decathlon team for a sneak preview of its 2007 “Leaf House” design at a barn-raising event from 6 to 9 p.m. on September 21 at Community Forklift in Edmonston, Md. This is also your chance to bid on the completed house! To attend, fill out and return the registration form by September 18. Sponsors for the event are welcome.

Alumni Notes

Hamid Jafarkhani, M.S. ’94 and Ph.D. ’97 electrical engineering, has been named a Fellow of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers and also won the IEEE Marconi Prize. Jafarkhani, a professor at the University of California – Irvine, is a former advisee of Clark School Dean Nariman Farvardin.

Rattan Khosa, M.S. ’71 civil engineering, was featured by the Chicago Sun Times as a successful entrepreneur. Khosa is the founder and CEO of Amsysco Inc.

Jignesh D. Maun, M.S. '06 fire protection engineering, received the 2006 Outstanding Student Presenter Award from the Combustion Institution Central States Section. This award is for his presentation in Cleveland of Thin Filament Pyrometry with a Digital Still Camera. This work stemmed from his M.S. thesis at the Clark School under the direction of Peter B. Sunderland. Maun now works at RJA in Walnut Creek, Calif.

Guillermo F. Mendoza, B.S. ’94 agricultural engineering, married Danielle Page Aiello in New Paltz, N.Y., last month. Mendoza is a hydrologist for Winrock International, working on water resources management in Honduras for the United States Agency for International Development. His wife is also a graduate of the university.

Charles L. Miller, M.S. ’71 and Ph.D. ’74 chemical engineering, has been named director of a new program office of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, provisionally to be called the Office of National Materials Program. Miller has served since 2003 as Director of the Division of Industrial and Medical Nuclear Safety in the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards.

Thomas A. Ruffini, B.S. ’01 fire protection engineering, has taken a new position with the Department of the Treasury's Office of Emergency Preparedness after completing a Master’s in engineering management at George Washington University.

In last month’s Alumni Notes section, we inadvertently listed the wrong graduation information for two alumni. Mark Huston is a 1985 mechanical engineering graduate and Robert L. Mitchell is a 1959 civil engineering graduate. We apologize for the errors.
