District 4 Director Russell L. Werneth, MD B
'64, was one of the original Tau Beta Pi district directors when the
District Program was started in 1976. From 1982 to 1986 he was Vice
President of Tau Beta Pi on the Executive Council from Maryland.
Afterward, he returned to District 4.
Russ received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland, where he was Maryland Beta's president. He later joined the Mechanical Engineering Department faculty at Maryland and was Chapter Advisor to Maryland Beta. He has received two prestigious awards from the University of Maryland: a Distinguished Volunteer Award and a College of Engineering Centennial Top 100 Alumnus Award. He also received a Master's Degree in Engineering Administration from the George Washington University in Washington, DC. Russ was a Mechanical Engineer for a U.S. Navy Laboratory, working in underwater systems and robotics. He also was an Adjunct Professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. Currently, Russ is an Engineering Manager for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Project at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. He is responsible for the design and development of unique astronaut tools and the training of the astronauts for HST servicing missions. He has worked on three successful Hubble missions between 1993 and 1999 and is presently working on the fourth mission, scheduled for mid-2001. Among his many Goddard awards are a Spaceflight Awareness Award and the coveted Astronaut's Silver Snoopy Award. Russ and his wife, Linda, live in Calvert County, MD. His hobbies are collecting Ford Mustangs (including a 1966 two-seater and a very rare 1995 removable hardtop Cobra) and related Mustang memorabilia, and photography (including 35-mm and digital). |
