Note: Thanks to everyone who ran for
offices! We had a great pool of nominees and look forward to working
with ALL of them next year at various events and on projects!
President
Himali Fernando:
Hi Ladies!!! My name
is Himali, and I am currently a junior BIOE major here at UMD. I am
running for President of SWE, and I am so excited to continue to be a
part of an amazing society! I have been involved in the club since my
freshmen year, and whether it has been through attending meetings,
helping out at events, or sending out e-mails, this club has been an
integral part of my college life. I hope to bring new and exciting
events to next year’s agenda, and I am looking forward to getting to
know each and everyone of you! My involvement with the club for the past
two years as Secretary, and my freshmen year as a member, has enabled me
to gain insight to the tasks and responsibilities of the position and
feel that I am well qualified to fill the role. With your help, I hope
that we can continue to make SWE one of the most prominent clubs on
campus! Thanks so much for your time and consideration!
Vice
President
Elizabeth Whyms: My name is
Elizabeth Whyms. I am a Junior majoring in
Computer Engineering. I am running
for the position of Vice President of SWE. This past year I served
as SWE's Director of Membership where I helped new members to join
the national SWE organization and gain access to our lounge, worked
with other SWE officers to plan meetings and events, and coordinated
Discover Engineering, our annual outreach program. Next year I look
forward to planning many more fun social/corporate events and
also sponsoring a trip for our members to the National SWE
Conference which will take place locally, in Baltimore! Vote for
Elizabeth for Vice President! Thanks for your support!
Treasurer
Ezinne Achinivu: Hi everybody! My name is
Ezinne, and I am running for treasurer of SWE for the 2008-2009
school year. I am currently a sophomore in Chemical Engineering. I have
contributed to SWE by being the Resume CD chair for the Spring of 2007.
This prepared me for the responsibilities of being a treasurer because I
was in charge of raising funds for SWE by first advertising the CD to
companies, and selling CD's to interested companies. I was also in
charge of compiling the student's resumes, creating and formatting the
CD's. After successfully doing that, I was appointed Director of Events
for the 2007-2008 school year. My duties include reserving rooms, making
and posting flyers for events, and in general just organizing all the
SWE events with the other officers. Aside from this, I actively
participated in board meetings and events. I also attended the SWE
national and regional conference that gave me more information on what
being a SWE officer entails, and especially being a treasurer. Thanks
for reading and for being a great SWE chapter this year. I look forward
to working with you again next year!
Secretary
Carole Delion: My name is Carole and I am a soon to be junior in Civil
Engineering. I am a big fan of the SWE members and programs and so I
hope to continue the education and fun that we have. I would like to be
the secretary for SWE because I want to help SWE’s development here at
Maryland. I have experience with secretary work in the sense that I
helped keep track of information with Women in Engineering events and I
am a very organized person. I know I can help make the SWE experience
for all the members memorable by keeping you informed of events,
programs, and anything that could help the ladies of SWE become
everything that they can be. Thanks!
Director of Membership
Christina Hitz:
I am a Freshman in
the Gemstone Program majoring in Bioengineering. I currently serve on
the Society of Women Engineers Student Advisory Board. In addition I
have volunteered for events promoting interest in engineering including
the Women in Engineering DREAM conference and served as a panelist for
the Living & Learning Community Q&A. As a member of the Society of Women
Engineers, I have enjoyed many of the social opportunities offered such
as the pumpkin carving. I regularly use and encourage others to use the
Society of Women Engineers lounge. I have extensive experience leading
and managing. This year, I was accepted to the Hinman CEOs program,
which teaches marketing and business. I hope to use these skills as the
Society of Women Engineers director of Membership.
Director of Corporate Relations
Synthia Mariadhas: Hi Ladies!
My name is Synthia, and
I want to be your Director of Corporate Relations! If selected,
more companies that focus on a wide range of engineering
fields will be chosen to present at SWE meetings. In addition, I
will build and maintain relationships with sponsoring companies,
providing SWE with a great business reputation and supporters. My
current position as the Director of Corporate Relations and Resume
CD Coordinator (2nd year), not only shows that I have
been helping SWE since my freshman year, but that I also have
experience in professionally communicating with companies. I
absolutely enjoy what I do (!) and hope to continue doing it. It's
great arranging meetings, such as the one with W.L. Gore, and seeing
how much people enjoyed the presentations or advertising our Resume
CD and raising $600.00! Finally, I'm super friendly and happy
J,
so vote for Synthia as Director of Corporate Relations, yay!
Director of Events
Melanie Wong:
My name is Melanie and I am a civil and environmental engineering
major. I am also involved in the Gemstone Student Activities Committee,
where I help plan and advertise social events, such as dances and
community events. I played an active role in the recent SWE Resume CD
fund raiser. I advertised for the fund raiser through email listservs
and fliers; managed student resumes; and designed the CD's. I would
love to create events that would bring both SWE members and other
engineering students together. I believe that I am qualified for the
position of Director of Events because I am organized, creative, and
work well with other people. I am also computer literate: I am able to
design advertisements and get the word out for events through listservs.
I am motivated and will put all of my effort into getting the job done
efficiently and effectively. Thanks for considering me for this
position! :)
Webmaster
Nancy Rogan: My
name is Nancy, and I know that I would make a wonderful Director of
Corporate Relations. If chosen, I feel that I have the professionalism
as well as the networking to attract different companies. As an ACE
Bechtel program alumnus, I could utilize the program connections to
attract more presenters, and thus students will have more opportunities
to network with various companies. As the Frederick County Workforce
Development Youth Representative for two years, I learned to communicate
in a professional manner. I am also active in the Women in Engineering
Living and Learning Community as the liaison to the Women in Engineering
Student Advisory Board and am a candidate for the Engineering Sorority,
Alpha Omega Epsilon. In addition, I have been extremely active with
volunteering for all of the Women in Engineering Youth events (i.e.
KEYS, G.S. Saturday) I have been attending SWE meetings and as a
freshman, I have yet to contribute significantly. I love taking
responsibility, being organized and facing challenges head on. I want to
give all I can to the Engineering community and as the Director of
Corporate Relations, I definitely could. I’m incredibly excited to see
to what paths SWE will take next year!
