December 10, 2008- 5:30-6:30 pm: Gingerbread House Making

The gingerbread house making is the last event SWE will be holding for this semester. As such, there are several things happening here. First everyone gets to build a gingerbread house, second, the best house wins a prize, third we are holding the Director of Corporate relations elections. If you are interested in this position you can email Synthia with questions at synthiam@gmail.com and please email Himali (hfernand@umd.edu) with a little info about yourselves (include a picture!) so we can present you on Wednesday's elections.

Past Events 2008-2009

November 19, 2008- 5:30- 6:30 pm: Tea and Scheduling Party

Engineering students of all grades are invited to attend the SWE Tea and Scheduling Party. A variety of teas will be served, along with snacks and finger food. There will be upperclassmen available to assist freshmen and sophomores in scheduling for the upcoming semester and beyond. There will also be bracelet making, with all supplies provided.  This will take place in the SWE Lounge, 0114 EGR. For More Information:

November 12, 2008- 5:30- 6:30 pm: General Electric Info Session/Career Panel

 2460 AVW conference room -Join SWE as we welcome GE. The General Electric company will be presenting an overview of their various branches and different opportunities for engineers in their company. In addition, there will be a career panel that allows students to ask GE engineers questions about the company and job options. Dinner will be served. GE is made up of several different companies: Aviation, Capital (Finance business), Energy, Healthcare, NBC Universal, Oil & Gas, Transportation, Water Process Technologies. GE has over 300,000 employees across the globe. From Thomas Edison's first commercially viable light bulb to the first x-ray machines, GE has continued to innovate what has yet to be imagined. GE was there for the first walk on the moon. GE created the first television network, the first man-made diamond and the first jet engine. This is imagination at work.

November 6-8, 2008: SWE National Conference

 Come take part in the Job Fair and the constructive networking activities that will take place at the National Conference in BALTIMORE this year. See the home page for details on how to attend.

October 28, 2008- 5:30-7: Pumpkin Carving Social Event

It's Halloween and that means it's time for carving pumpkins! Join the rest of SWE in celebrating the wonderful fall tradition while getting to know others in the Society.

October 15, 2008: Welcome to W.L. Gore   

Come and learn about the W.L. Gore's history, culture, and products! W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc. is a privately held, world class manufacturing organization, providing diverse products in four divisions - fabrics, electronic products, medical devices, and industrial products.  Join the meeting to learn about the company's history, culture, and products! This event will take place in Kim Engineering building Rooms 1107 and 1111.
Dinner is provided!

September 23, 2008 - 5:30-7 pm : First General Body Meeting/ Ice Cream Social!

Get to know the new SWE Officers and the new members in SWE! Not in SWE yet? Come and see what it's all about and enjoy ice cream sundaes and lots of fun games. Meet in the SWE Lounge at five and have room for all the ice cream!

 

Past Events From Last Semester- Thanks to all who participated!

February 16th, 2008 (Satuday): WIE Dream Conference!                                            Nearly 400 students will be coming to UMD for several workshops, forums, demonstrations, and discussions that will introduce them to the wonderful world of engineering! This year, SWE has the opportunity to host 2 panels for students and parents, and is currently looking for interested members to come and help out. The student panel will be held from 10:15am-12:00pm, and the parent panel from 1:30-3:00pm. If you are interested in volunteering for either event, or wish to help out at the Information Fair held at 12:30-2:00pm, please e-mail Fran Lee at franlee@umd.edu with your contact info. Volunteers will be provided with lunch and SWE stars will be awarded, so come out and help if you can!

February 20, 2008 (Wednesday)- 5:30pm: E-Week W.L. Gore Presentation!                    W.L. Gore & Associates, Inc. is an engineering company that sells innovative products into a variety of industries from aerospace to medical devices to chemical processing. To learn more about the industries Gore serves visit www.gore.com.  Associates from this company are coming to give a  presentation looking at communication broken into three aspects: verbal, non verbal, and tone. We will explore the impact of communication on those we work with and discuss how raising awareness can heighten our ability to communicate more effectively.

February 29th, 2008 (Friday & Leap Year day!) - 7 Hour day trip                          The proposed agenda for this trip from WL Gore & Associates is below:                1)  Travel from UMD campus to WL Gore & Associates - 1.5 hours
2)  We'll take you to one of our conference rooms, introduce ourselves to all of the students, and give a brief overview of the daily agenda  - 0.5 hours
3)  Capability Center Tour - We'll over some history of our company, give you an overview of all the materials we make, and show you all of our products - 1.5 hours
4)  Lunch  - 1 hour
5)  Travel to one of our manufacturing facilities for our Fabrics Division - We'll give you a tour of the plant where you'll see some of our processing equipment, labs where we test our materials (including our famous "Rain Room"), and while you're walking through the facility you can get an idea of the "office environment" at that facility. - 1.5 hours
6)  Travel back to College Park - 1.5 hours

March 7-9, 2008: SWE Regional Conference                                                                  Interested in learning more about SWE at the national level? Want to have the opportunity to come and meet other members from around our region? Then come and join your SWE officers in Richmond, Virginia for the 2008 SWE Regional Conference! Presently, we are looking for interested members to come and join us on this three day event, where we will have the opportunity to attend workshops, panels, and career fairs, while interacting with other national members. If interested, please e-mail Chapter President Rachel Emmel at remmel@umd.edu by midnight on Thursday, February 7th for priority consideration. Please note that interested participants must be national members in order to attend, and able to leave UMD by 12pm on March 7th. Please visit

March 13th, 2008 - 6-8pm: Corporate Networking Mixer Sponsored by BAE Systems   

Bring your resumes! BAE is searching for students interested in co-ops, internships, and full time positions. Dinner will be provided and dress is business casual. Event held in the Jeong Kim Engineering building!

March 25, 2008 - 5:30pm: UMD Women's Basketball Game!                                              SWE will provide dinner in the lounge and then we will head over to Comcast to cheer on the Lady Terps together!!

April 2rd, 2008 - 6:00pm: Registration Discussions & Dinner in SWE Lounge

 We will be having dinner and discussing courses for registration. We usually break everyone up into majors so younger members can ask juniors and seniors for advice on which classes to take and which teachers they would recommend. Also, a demo on how to use Venus and OurUMD will be presented! We strongly recommend that freshman and sophomores attend! POTBELLY SANDWICHES and COOKIES will be served.

 

April 16, 2008 - 5:00pm: Northrop Grumman  and a Sweet End to the Semester! Northrop Grumman will be giving a presentation on how to best transition from school into the work environment (full time, internships, and co-ops will all be discussed!) Come to this meeting to learn how to make a great impression at your summer internship or full time job! Of course, dinner will be provided. We will also have officer elections, a special dessert, and a goodbye ceremony for our senior officers. Come to bid them farewell and to welcome your newly elected officers for the 2008-2009 school year!

April 26, 2008 - 8am- 1pm: Discover Engineering Program on Maryland Day           

During this event, Maryland High School students participate in an Annual Saturday Program consisting of speakers and lab experiments to explore and learn about the different engineering disciplines.
