About SWE

What is SWE?

The University of Maryland student section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a non-profit, educational, service organization, which supports women and men in their pursuit of a career in engineering. This student section was established in 1974. We are an active group of students, both undergraduate and graduate women and yes - men too!

The
Women in Engineering (WIE) Program is different from SWE - it is a program within the A. James Clark School of Engineering run by faculty, graduate and undergraduate students. It is dedicated to the recruitment and retention of women engineering students at the pre-college, undergraduate, and graduate levels.

SWE Missions

  • Inform young women, their parents, counselors, and the general public, of the qualifications and achievements of women engineers and the opportunities open to them
  • Serve as a center of information for young women, their parents, counselors, and the general public, of the qualifications and achievements of women engineers and the opportunities open to them.
  • Encourage women engineers to attain high levels of education and professional achievement.
